MCCAFFREY LETS TITLE SLIP AWAY
June 2nd, 1904
Jack Johnson (16-1) won for the second time over # Dominic McCaffrey (8-5-3) with a UD15. But it was alot closer than last time.
There was alot of back and forth in this fight with neither fighter winning 3 straight rounds. McCaffrey was bleeding from the nose from round 7 on. Dom's big chance came during the 12th round when Johnson's left eye began to swell shut. It was bad enough that stoppage was imminent. But McCaffrey didn't press in the 13 or 14th, and Johnson stayed to the outside. Mccaffrey won the 15th but it wasn't enough.
I had it 144-141. Tom Trunzo at ringside had it 143-142. The official judges saw it 143-142/147-139/144-142.
It was Johnson's 5th defense.
