ROOT TAKES BACK TITLE
August 18, 1904
Jack Root (17-4) took back the title he lost 4 months prior with a UD15 over champ Leo Houck (6-2-1). It would appear the two would be set for a rubber match. Although both sides are mum at the moment.
This fight wasn't as close as the first. Root dropped Houck to one knee in the first and kept up the pressure most of the fight. Houck swarmed Root in the 5th after Root dropped back to the ropes after an uppercut landed flush. Root's right eye began to swell after that round but cut man Chick Ferrera, did a great job and kept the swelling to a minimum the rest of the way.
I had it 144-140. Harry Otty, ringside, had it 143-141. The official judges had it 144-140/143-141/146-139.
