Fitzsimmons Might Be Unbeatable
December 24, 1904
Bob Fitzsimmons (17-0) destroyed the #1 contender Joe Butler (17-3) with a 10th round TKO. Many felt that Butler would be the one to give Fitz a run for their money. "Many" were sadly mistaken.
Fitz took control of the bout early and dominated the fight. He swelled up Butler's right eye in the 4th. Knocked him down in the 5th. Cut him and swelled up his left eye in the 6th. Knocked him down twice in the 8th. Knocked him down again in the 9th.
In the corner between the 9th and the 10th. Butler pleaded with the ring doctor to let him go back out. The Dr. let him but then stopped it one minute in when Butler got hit 6 straight times.
Fitz commented after the fight that he had nothing left to prove and would explore a jump to LHW.
