How do fighters with losing records wind up fighting for titles?
I've been spending lots of time on Boxrec looking for less-than-skilled (i.e., 1-rated) fighters to rate for TBCB. I keep noticing instances of guys with hideous or so-so records fighting for vacant titles.
For example, on March 9, 2002 one Danny Wofford, with a record of 17-94-2, fought for the vacant WBS Super HW title. Whatever the WBS is, should they be sanctioning a title shot for a guy with a record like that?
I also notice a lot of guys in Asia and Eastern Europe who have very lopsided losing records fighting for national and regional titles. This includes countries like the Philippines and South Korea, both of which have produced world-class fighters.
How does a man with a losing record get a shot at ANY title? Maybe somebody out there could enlighten me as to how these things work. I understand the wierdness that often accompanies the major sanctioning bodies, but some of these guys I'm looking at are really, really lousy fighters--at least according to their records.
