Miller was a second round pick of the Yankees, 26th overall in 1918. His first major league hit, in his second at
bat was a home run off of Ben Hunt of Detroit. He went 3-for-5 with 3 runs and 3 rbi's on that day. The homer did not come in his first major league at bat as he grounded out against the A's Max Fiske in his only plate appearance the season before.
The Yankees traded him to the Cubs in 1927 for pitcher Ted Wingfield, who never appeared in a major league game. The deal was just a cost-cutting move by the Yankees at the time and Miller, who was a free agent at seasons end, resigned with the Bronx Bombers the following season. However, his stay in the Windy City was fruitful as he won a World Series with the Cubs and narrowly missed being named World Series MVP losing out to teammate Frankie Frisch. Following the Yankees World Series win in 1933 Miller moved to the A's as a free agent and enjoyed the best season of his career. The next year, 1936. he won a World Series in Philadelphia with the A's.. He signed with the Senators prior to the 1937 season.
He wants to reach the 3000 hit plateau but with 195 to go he may fall just short of it. Either way his career should end at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. In real life the career of Thomas Royall Miller lasted just 9 games and 8 at bats with the Boston Braves in 1918-19.
Next up the 1939 draft and we see where Ted Williams goes.
