June Draft Highlights

New Orleans - RF Randy Geiger, 18 (7/8/9)
Out of Apponequet Regional HS (Massachusetts), this slugger hit .547 with 9 HRs in 99 AB his senior year.

Miami - 1B Chris Young, 18 (8/6/10)
Hitting .526 and slugging .826 in 78 ABs at Pace Academy (Georgia), Chris has the skills to compete at a high level.

Memphis - SP Elmer Barnes, 16 (4/9/8)
This young lefthander has all the makings of a solid starter, throwing 53 Ks in 46 1/3 IP for Pioneer HS (Michigan).

Dallas - SP Carl Young, 18 (8/7/6)
Going 12-2 with a 1.28 for North Iredell HS (North Carolina), this southpaw has good stuff and keeps the ball down.

Nashville - CF Blair Gaines, 20 (5/5/8)
The first college player selected, this leftie hit .309 with a .392 OBP in 200 AB for Northern Arizona.

Tampa - CL Jeff Telford, 19 (7/8/8)
Sporting outstanding stuff, this rightie threw 136 Ks in 74 1/3 IP for Tantasqua HS (Massachusetts).

Houston - 1B Shane Early, 19 (5/6/5)
Despite hitting .599 for St. Paul Central (Minnesota), Shane's future remains unpredictable.

Jacksonville - SP Douglas Nally, 24 (5/7/6)
Yet another leftie, this Temple Owl threw 96 Ks in 103 1/3 IP.

Carolina - SP Steve Richardson, 18 (5/7/8)
Only 8-4 with 69 Ks in 73 2/3 IP for Holy Names Academy (New York), this righthander might surprise.

Norfolk - 2B Will Brown, 22 (5/4/7)
Originally from Petersburg WV, the first round is a stretch for this switchhitter.
[Interpretation: This guy wasn't one of the twenty I wrote blurbs for before the draft. ]

Atlanta - SS Greg Highsmith, 18 (6/4/4)
Despite hitting .562 and slugging .840 for Forest Lake (Florida), Greg needs to turn raw talent into polished skills.

San Antonio - MR Carl Brittingham, 19 (8/8/6)
With 110 Ks in 67 1/3 IP at Rolesville HS (North Carolina), this portsider has the mentality of a true winner.
