Jacksonville remains in second place, but lost 12 out of 13 beginning June 2 to fall eleven games behind defending champion Norfolk. The Ospreys' .244 team batting average is worst in the league, with LF Tim Ryan (.199, 9 HR, 27 RBI in 271 AB), C Greg Olson (.189, 9 HR, 40 RBI in 225 AB) and RF Waldo Hertel (.186 in June) the worst of the lot.
Though there is little drama in the East, the Western Division remains very tight. At the moment, San Antonio leads Memphis by a half-game, but many days in June saw four teams within a single game of the top spot. Nashville, still just 3 1/2 back, slip to fifth place after SP Bill Ebeling (6-5, 3.00) and his $16.7 million salary went down for the year with a ruptured disc on June 10.
Western Division Batter of the Month:
SS Raymond Timmerman (NSH) - Hit .350 with 6 HR and 25 RBI, 2nd BotM of the year for 1949 MVP
Western Division Pitcher of the Month:
Dave Donnell (HOU) - Went 5-0 with a 1.22 ERA
Eastern Division Batter of the Month:
3B Travis O'Connell (ATL) - Hit .356 with 8 HR and 32 RBI
Eastern Division Pitcher of the Month:
Jonathan "Crash" Ford (MIA) - Went 4-0 with a 2.36 ERA, but a pulled tricep on June 24 puts Crash on the DL for an estimated three to four weeks.
