Johnson gets off the canvas to defend title

July 3rd, 1905

Jack Johnson (19-1) got up from a 4th round knockdown to dominate the rest of the fight and defend his title for the 8th time against #4 John J. Dwyer (12-5-1).

Dwyer started fast winning the first two rounds then knocking the champ down in the 4th. He seemed to have worn himself out though as Johnson shook off the cobwebs and dominated the rest of the fight. Dwyer was cut in the 10th and knocked down in the 14th.

I had the fight 145-138. Christopher Almodovar also had it 145-138.

The official judges had it 145-138/144-139/145-139

On the undercard

HW - Jake Kilrain draw Billy Woods
LHW - Joe Choynski TKO3 Al Weinig
HW - Mick Dooley TKO 6 Tony Ross (club fight, Ross is a beginner)
HW - Syd Hughes draw Jim Daly (club fight, Hughes is a beginner)
MW - Denny Kelliher UD10 Arthur Upham (club fight)
