Fictional, IMO, gives you more leeway in creating characters and fleshing them out with background information. Also, fictional allows you to structure what you want to say, how you want to say it. Creatively, it's more open-ended. That flexibility helps when the game throws you a curve.

That is what I was thinking, conflicts with reality would make it more difficult. On the other hand I will have to create a backstory with a fictional league. I'll probably end up doing that, the flexibility will be worth the increased preparation.
