Brewtsre-Meehan
LAS VEGAS, Sept. 4th - In another surprising Las Vegas ending, Lamon Brewster squeaked out a split decision against Australia's Kali Meehan over 12 rounds for the WBO heavyweight title on Saturday. The crowd booed.
Meehan, who was trying to become his country's first heavyweight title-holder in 107 years, gave a spirited effort that fell short according to the judges in a Don King Promotions fight card held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. There were 9,128 in attendance.
The square-jawed fighter was a huge underdog against Brewster but hammered the title-holder from the third round on to the surprise of the fans who felt it would be an easy victory for the title-holder.
"A lot of people thought I don't belong here but I think I do," said Meehan (29-2, 23 KOs) graciously. "I'm happy I stayed in for 12 rounds."
The 6-5 Australian by way of New Zealand, started building momentum with right hands. In the eighth round he pummeled Brewster as he lay against the ropes. At one time he landed 24 right hands without a counter from Brewster. Referee Jay Nady stood close by ready to stop the fight but let it go on when the Los Angeles fighter began to throw punches.
That round turned out to be a pivotal point in the fight.
The judges final tally was 114-113 Meehan, 114-113 and 115-113 Brewster.
"I definitely felt I done enough to win," said Brewster (31-2, 27 KOs) in his first title defense since winning it last April against Wladimir Klitschko. "I told everyone he was a tough fighter before the fight."
Both fighters agreed a rematch would be welcome but King announced Evander Holyfield will be Brewster's next opponent.
