A two-horse race is developing in the Western Division as San Antonio and Dallas are tied for the top spot. Both teams made deals to try and gain an edge in this Texas-sized battle:
On June 3, the Drifters acquired C Mark Johnson (.343 in 169 AB, 5 HR, 31 RBI) and MR Evan Becnel (4.71 in 36 1/3 IP, WHIP 1.82) from Carolina for MR Terry Bingham (3.80 in 47 1/3 IP, WHIP 1.16) and C Gary Armitage (.250, OBP .431 in AAA).
Meanwhile, today the Missions send 2B Matt Clayton (.302, 7 HR, 27 RBI) and $200,000 to New Orleans for SP Richard Bays (7-5, 2.27, WHIP 1.25).
The Pelicans suffer a big blow on June 4 when RF Roger Seidl (.300, 5 HR, 23 RBI) tears his rib cage while diving for a ball. The $16.7 million veteran is out until at least August.
In the East, after a six-game losing streak, Tampa has won ten of their last thirteen to take a one game lead over Jacksonville with Carolina still lurking in third, two games out. Elsewhere...
Miami 2B Jonathan "Mr. Miracle" Ralls gets his 2000th hit in style at Norfolk on June 29, hitting a two-run homer off Calvin Thayer. A three-time MVP, Ralls has hit .292 in his career with 338 taters and 1422 walks.
