Tampa loses eleven of twelve before the All-Star break and six of their last seven to fall into a distant third place in the Eastern Division race. Jacksonville takes over the lead once again, with Carolina still two games out. The Flyers do not stand pat, though, acquiring RF Dale Francis (.265, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 58 R, 60 BB) from Nashville for LF Lloyd Mitchell (.292 in 96 AB) and a minor leaguer on July 14 and signing Francis to a three-year, $8.0 million extension.
The Tomahawks have been a tale of two teams, stellar at home (35-13) and dismal on the road (19-36). Tampa does tie up its superstar centerfielder for the foreseeable future, signing David Powell (.315, 20 HR, 60 RBI, 77 R, 65 BB) to $6.6 million for the next six years.
Out West, San Antonio wins ten straight beginning July 4 to take a 3 1/2 game lead over Dallas. The Missions also extend SP Jay Williams (9-6, 3.44, WHIP 1.26) to three years at $6.2 million.
The Drifters will have a hard time catching up with a decimated rotation. July 26 sees Paul Palen (9-7, 4.69, WHIP 1.52) go down until late August with a torn bicep, then the next day, John McMasters (6-6, 4.11, WHIP 1.33) ruptures a disc in his back, ending his season.
Elsewhere, New Orleans has something to cheer about on July 9 when Jim Wright hurls his third career no-hitter at Carolina, the first no-no in nearly three years. Wright, already the only pitcher in CBA history with multiple no-hitters, also becomes the only pitcher in league history to throw a no-no in both divisions!
