Gans Wins 10th Title Defense
November 23rd, 1905
Joe Gans (20-1-1) scored another UD15 (his 3rd) over #2 George Lavigne (16-6-1) for his 10th title defense.
Gans dropped Lavigne with an uppercut 1 minute into the first round then controlled the fight the rest of the way. It was a boring fight just like the previous 2 matches. Gans continues to avoid the main challenger to his crown Jack McAuliffe who moved up to #2.
McAuliffe was recently upset by Bill Dacey and Gans laughed at the notion of fighting him. "He lost to Dacey, I should fight Dacey instead." It was pointed out to Gans that McAuliffe was well ahead on score cards when a bad cut stopped the bout in the last round. Gans' replied "Still counts as a loss don't it?"
I scored the bout 145-141. Christopher Almodover ringside scored the bout 146-141. The official judges had it 145-141/145-142/145-141.
