BOWE TO TACKLE TYSON...AGAIN

BIG DADDY BEATS PAGE FOR NORTH AMERICAN AND US STRAPS, AND SETS UP DATE WITH 'IRON' MIKE.

Atlantic City, NJ. Riddick Bowe was simply too strong for Greg Page as he took a unanimous twelve round decision. Bowe took the opening round, but was then floored right at the beginning of the second by a perfectly eexecuted hook. After that, however, it was all Bowe, as he went on to win seven of the remaining ten rounds. Bowe won rounds three through six, dropping Page with a bodyshot in the fifth. Round seven was even but Bowe was back in control in the eighth. He took a breather in the ninth, then won rounds ten and eleven. Page, realising he needed a knockout to win, really went for it in the last round, but it was too late, and Bowe won by scores of115-112 twice, and 116-111. Bowe won the vacant North American and US heavyweight titles, and is now next in line for Tyson.

"I can't wait," Bowe said after the bout, referring to Tyson, "last time he beat me with two seconds left, this time I'm going to beat him with eleven rounds left. Knockout in the first round." A bold prediction, but it's no secret these two don't like each other, and it promises to be explosive.

In the chief support, Larry Holmes stopped 'Big' John Tate in the third round when Tate was no longer able to defend himself. Each man had won a round apiece going into the third, but Holmes just began picking Tate apart and the referee waved it all off with eight seconds remaining.

Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes and Gerrie Coetzee put on an absolute humdinger of an opening round, going toe to toe, then Dokes seemed to lose interest, and Coetzee won a unanimous decision with scores of 94-92, 95-91, and 94-93.

Tony 'TNT' Tubbs knocked out an out of shape Trevor Berbick in the first of a scheduled ten. The end came at the 2:27 mark when Tubbs put his opponent away with a cross.

'Terrible' Tim Witherspoon beat Jody Ballard by unanimous decision with scores of 79-73, and 80-71 twice. Ballard went down in the eighth from a bodyshot.

Derek Banks and Anthony 'Big Hand' Willis, both coming of impressive wins, fought to a six round draw in the opening bout. The scores were 59-55 Banks, 59-55 Willis, and 57-57.
