Canton, OH. James 'Buster' Douglas retained his Ohio State heavyweight title by the skin of his teeth, when he fought to a majority draw against Tony 'TNT' Tubbs. It was ten rounds of solid boxing from both men, and a draw was a fair result. There were no knockdowns, and it didn't look like there would be any, as both men worked cautiously behind the jab for the duration of the fight.
After the bout, Claude Abrams of Boxing News spoke to both men. Although Douglas and Tubbs are big rivals in Ohio, there is no ill feelings between the two.
"It was a close fight," Tubbs said, "but I felt I just squeezed it, by a round, maybe two."
Douglas shook his head with a smile on his face. "No way, you didn't do enough to beat me," Douglas replied. "Remember, I'm the champ, you've got to take the title from me."
"Next time buddy," Tubbs remarked, "next time."
It looks likely that these two will get it on again in the future, but probably not right away, as Douglas now gets a mandatory shot at the US title held by Riddick Bowe, who also owns the North American strap, which would also be on the line.
In the chief support, Larry Holmes blew away Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes in three rounds. Dokes was never in the fight. He looked ready to go halfway through round one, and the writing was on the wall from then on. Round 2 was a big round for Holmes, 10-6 on two of the judges cards, due to the fact that Dokes was down twice and finished the round with a swollen eye. The end came in the third when Dokes, out on his feet, walked onto a vicous uppercut at the 2:52 mark.
Frank Tate won his rematch against Davey Moore, boxing his way to a comfortable points decision with scores of 99-91 twice, and 97-93. Moore started well, but by the fourth round Tate was well in control with his slick boxing skills.
'Terrible' Tim Witherspoon put in an impressive display against the outgunned Gary 'The Bull' Winmon. He dropped his opponent in the second, then finished him off in the sixth, when, after dropping Winmon for a count of five, opened up on the defenceless Winmon, with the referee stepping in to stop the one sided fight.
Pinklon Thomas, usually a slick boxer, dished out a beating over two rounds to Derek Amos. A bodyshot finished his foe.
James 'Lights Out' Toney totally controlled his six round opener against 'Irish' Chris Ward, stopping his opponent in the fifth round after Ward had been down from a punishing bodyshot. Ward was also down in the opener.
