Eckfords Retake The Title
Despite the success on the field in 1859 the Brooklyn Atlantics found the need to replace two of their nine after 3B Tom Countryman and CF Bob Murray chose to leave the game. Also departing the field was Mutuals RF John Burns after only one season. The Eckfords nine remained unchanged since forming in 1856.

Of the three players only Murray was remarkable as he hit .429 in 1856 with a .629 OBP and slugging pct. of .714 but of course that was only in two games. As with most stats from the 1850s, and even 1860s, there were a lot less games recorded and of course under different rules than today.

The season began with the Mutuals hosting the Atlantics at Elysian Field on July 2nd and the heavily favoured Atlantics did not disappoint winning 11-8. The return match was held at the Atlantics home ground on July 9th and was a shocking 44-8 loss for the Mutuals.

The Atlantics accepted a challenge from the Eckfords and visited the Eckford home grounds on August 20th where they defeated the home team 4-1. The return match was held on the anniversary of the start of the Battle of Brooklyn, August 27th, and the Atlantics hosted the Eckfords who upset the home favourites 8-3. With the series tied 1-1 the rubber match was held on September 3rd at the Eckfords home field where the Eckfords surprised last year’s champions winning the game 5-4.
