PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
Lets say I have a player in AAA. A 24 year old LF. He has ratings as good in every category in terms of talent. His ability ratings are all about 4. Will he develope better in AAA or would he develope the same in the majors.

I would say it depends on your "need" but being 24 he will probably do OK at the major league level(not great right away however). No "sure things" though.

I think he asked if a player at that point would develop better at AAA or at the major league level, so I am not sure if you really answered his question.
To me and many other owners, the question of WHEN to bring a guy up from AAA to the big leagues is of major concern. I realize it is not an exact science, but I am wondering at what point you are hurting a players development by leaving him in AAA. Further, does "Player X" get to a point where his ratings would increase more quickly at the Big League level than if he remained in AAA? Thanks. |

I would bring him up and see how he does, maybe about 25 games and check his stats, if he struggles I would move him back down into AAA, if he does good, leave him in and trade you previous starting player for a need.
I've seen guys at 22 come up to the biggs and stay and I've seen 26 year olds need more time in the minors. Todd |

I would like to see more defensive development occur on the major league level. The main catagories that improve or decline in the majors are offensive and pitcher ratings. I don't think I've ever seen a player's defensive percentage change while playing in the majors. If a everyday player with a rating of .950 ended a season with a .975 feilding percentage, his rating should be bumped up a few points. Conversely, should his season percentage be less, then his rating would be reduced.

That's one of the few challenges in the game. You should have to take a leap of faith at some point.
I'm amazed it keeps coming up, yet people complain about the game being easy. I think it would be better if we got away from the red and green arrows in the minors, too. There shouldn't be a tried and trued method that works a majority of the time, just like in real baseball.

I agree, I don't even look at the arrows, for the most part I go with stats - although I have been getting away from that as the game seems to rely on moving your players up when the arrows tell you to.
I would like to have the option to sign a manager of the minor leagues who based on his ratings would be responsible for moving your players up and down and also send you an email report on the 3 minor league systems. Todd |

That's perhaps my favorite part of this game, NO ONE knows for sure. I just can't get enough of this game! And the wait for OOTP 4 is brutal! [ January 30, 2002: Message edited by: bigphesta ]</p> |

What about players getting too old and festering in the minors? I have some 28year olds that seem to be bums in my computer controlled team's AAA teams. Do they decided these guys are bums and let them go so the younger guys can get some PT?
At what age, even if they have decent ratings should you give up on them? |

Whenever they stop producing. In the minors, If a player hasn't reached his potential by 30, I figure he's either going to be a bench player or a career minor leaguer. If he's a good defensive player, I sometimes offer low contracts or otherwise let them go into free agency.
