This will be my third (and hopefully last) year managing in the Low Minors. Our GM has been busy in the off-season as our team looks quite different. Our offense looks to be improved and we have a ton of depth in the infield. Last year I had trouble finding anyone who could hit and play SS decently. Should be easier this year. Our pitching is probably worse and it's very left-handed. Our rotation will start the season with 3 lefties and 1 righty, while our bullpen is evenly split: 4 of each. Overall, I think we should be able to improve over last year. Our owner seems to think so too. He's expecting us to play better than .500. We'll see. :p

Our performance in the 2nd half of 2011 was especially abysmal (18-32). And I received a score of 20 for the season (compared to 39 in 2010). We went 12-25 in 1-run games, which explains a lot about our struggles. We lost a quarter of our games played by 1 run! Ack!

I had hoped to have a shot at managing the High Minors after this year. But it looks like I'll need another season. I'm "still inexperienced."

What started out as a pitching duel between starters Lou Brissie and Early Wynn ended with the Indians on top, 5-2.

Lou Brissie left after one out in the 7th inning when Johnny Kucab came in for relief. Kucab has pitched well this season allowing only two earned runs in six games and 14 innings of work, but it was Bobby Avila's one out home run that gave Kucab (L,1-1) his first blown save on the year. Spotty defense for the A's also contributed to the four runs in the seventh which allowed the Indians some breathing room for the remainder of the game.

Cleveland's Early Wynn (W,8-3) went the distance picking up player of the game honors. He allowed two earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out three.

The two teams face off Sunday for a double header.

The Philadelphia Athletics took game three in fine fashion against the Chicago White Sox Friday night at Shibe Park, 8-4.

Behind another strong pitching performance by ace starter Bobby Shantz, the A's sent the Sox packing. Shantz pitched another complete game, raising his season win total to 9, tops in the American League. Shantz also helped his cause with a two RBI day.

The A's offense jumped on Chicago's Max Surkont (L,4-2) early with five runs in the second inning and coasted the rest of the way.

"We feel good after taking two of three against Chicago", said manager Nicholas Morgan after the game. "We've been playing .500 ball most of the season, and this win should give us some momentum going forward."

The win keeps the Athletics on pace in the tight American League chase. "If we hold our own, we might be a contender late in the season" says Morgan.

Philadelphia hosts the Cleveland Indians this weekend for three games before embarking on a two-week, 13-game road trip.

A's starter Bob Hooper (L, 4-2) got booted out of the game early, allowing seven earned runs on eleven hits in only four innings pitched. White Sox first baseman Luke Appling teed off Hooper in the second inning with a two-run shot. The left handed lead off hitter went three for four on the day with two RBI and three runs scored.
With only a week left in the first half of the 2012 season, some teams are building on their division leads while others are trying to meet expectations and stay in the race.

In the Atlantic Division, Maine has opened up a 5 game lead on 2nd place Massachusetts. Maine did suffer the loss this week however, of Jesus Quinones, an outfielder they had signed as a free agent during the off season. Quinones suffered a fractured skull in a game against the New York Liberty, putting an end to his career at the age of 30.

Thirty-seven year old Virginia sp Edward McPherson is pitching like his career is far from over and he has helped Virginia to a 17-2 mark in May as they lead the Southern Division by 6 games over the defending SL East champion, Georgia Rebels. Georgia is struggling through a season of injuries while also struggling to stay above .500.

What ever team has the best current win streak in the Western Division will be the current division leader. Illinois and Arkansas currently share that lead with both teams only 1 game over .500.

Nebraska leads the Plains Division by 5 games over Kansas with the help of a homerun hungry Melvin Brumbach, who has a league leading 15 in 41 games.

Wyoming, Montana, and New Mexico once again share the division lead in the Mountain Division, all tied with the 4th best record in the league. Last place Colorado is only 3 games behind the 'big three.'

In the Pacific, defending SLCBA Champion California lead 2nd place Arizona by 6 games. Last season each team in the division finished under .500, this season California is the only team above .500. Arizona has a team that can compete, however Washington and Nevada need to make plans for next season.

The Philadelphia Athletics hung on and defeated the Chicago White Sox last night by the score of 3-2.

A's starter Alex Kellner went the distance, picking up his 3rd win of the season. He also was named player of the game for his performance, striking out five. His outing was solid through eight innings but ran into a mild charge from the heart of the Chicago lineup in the ninth.

The A's snapped a consecutive two-game shutout streak by scoring three runs off Sox starter Bill Wight. Wight (L, 7-5) walked an uncharacteristically high six batters.

The Philadelphia offense broke through their offensive slump in the fourth inning with a one-out two-RBI single from veteran outfielder Wally Moses. Moses, 39, lifts his RBI total to 11 on the year.

The two teams meet again Thursday night for the second game of a three-game set. Philadelphia sends Bob Hooper (4-1, 2.28 ERA) to the mound to face Bob Kuzava (6-5, 4.29 ERA) of the White Sox.

June 6, 1950 (Tuesday) - Philadelphia, PA
W/L record 24-25 (.490), T-4th place, 4.5 GB, Streak L2, Last10 5-5

The A's fell to the St. Louis Browns last night at Shibe park by the score of 2-0. The A's have been struggling behind the plate recently, and have not scored a run in more than two straight games. The current drought stands at 25 consecutive scoreless innings. The offensive woes run even deeper, as they have been shut out in three of their last four games.

Lefty starter Lou Brissie (L, 8-2) gets saddled with the loss, though he pitched well enough to get player of the game award. Brissie was serving up a two-hit shutout into the 9th until he gave up a two out, two-run home run off the bat of Billy Johnson, his second of the year.

The defeat was a disappointment to the Athletics who were hoping to take two of three games from the Browns. Though the A's bats have been slumping of late, they out-hit St. Louis 7-3.
