Have any of you guys run any tests on the effects of defence on pitching(era, runners per 9,hits etc.)? Also, is therea corolation between a player's position and his ability to learn a new position; like can a LF or C learn to play 2B as quickly and as well as a SS can?
Thanks Rich |

No tests, but there is ample evidence from OOTP3 online leagues - quality defense has a major effect on pitching (as it should ). A catcher can sometimes learn to play SS, but a 2B will usually learn to play SS more quickly. |

Thats kinda what I thought too, based on experience and common sense. I assume that defense up the middle has a bigger impact than at the corners. Is there one position- SS or CF maybe- that can turn my good pitchers' bad ERA's around? And what kind of an impact does a C's defensive ability have?

Please take with a boulder of salt : - Don't forget about fielding percentage. Everyone's fielding percentage is important, but obviously it's much more important that the guys that get the most chances have a good percentage. - Same deal with range - I think SS, 2B, and CF are most important as they get the most chances. Some GM's feel catcher range is not very important, and I don't concentrate on that either, though I will usually look at the catcher arm, fielding %, and passed balls. IMO the SS position might have the highest impact on team ERA. Is a B range SS with a .979 fielding % worth more than a A range SS with a .962 fielding %? Geez, you got me there. - Look out for truly terrible fielding percentages when using the Lahman DB. Maybe they corrected this by now but I recall an OF with a .700 fielding percentage getting 50+ errors in a season. Overall I think the decisions of bat versus glove priorities are fairly realistic. I have had great hitters I could not trade due to poor defense, but I managed to fit them into an offense-starved lineup (imagining them wearing shinpads at 3rd base ). I have also had (as a NL club) a great hitter that was virtually unplayable due to terrible defense, and I had to cart him off at a reduced price to an AL club. |
