The Cleveland Infants captured the Western League title by two games over the Chicago Pirates with a 94-56 record, heading into a World Series match-up against the New York Giants, who finished the season at 82-68.

The Infants, led by a talented trio of Hughie Jennings, Ed Delahanty, and Reddy Mack all entering into their prime. The Infants had a balanced team, with the second best offense in the league behind the Pirates, and the best pitching staff, led by Jersey Bakely (34-13, 2.48 ERA), Charlie Hodnett (30-18, 2.66 ERA), and Red Ehret (26-22, 3.21 ERA).

The Infants polished off the Giants in 5 games to capture their first World Championship.
