1892 was the first year following the demise of the National League, and the first year with two separate leagues. In the newly formed Eastern League the Buffalo Bisons, one of the original Players League teams finished with a 86-64 record, and beat out the Philadelphia Athletics by 3 games.

The Bisons offense was led by Hitter of the Year Jesse Burkett who hit .298, swiped 64 bases, and scored 105 runs. Joining Burkett in the lineup was a young duo of Bill Dahlen (.303, 10 HR,...

In the second year of the Players League, the Baltimore Terrapins came in first place in a 16 team division, 1 1/2 games better than the Columbus Solons. With a 91-59 record the top seeded Terrapins took on the second seeded Solons for the Championship.

With an average offense featuring outfielder Mike Tiernan, catcher Pat Carroll, and outfielder Joe Knight, along with an aging real life Hall of Famer, Cap Anson, pitching was the Terrapins forte.

1890 Pittsburgh Burghers - A Deeper Look

Posted 10-08-2009 at 08:40 PM by NYY #23

The Pittsburgh Burgers were the inaugural Players League Champions, but they did so in an unconventional way. With only one division the second place Burghers finished the season with an 82-58 record, eight games behind the heavily favored Brooklyn Ward Wonders. But the Players League Championship pitted the first and second place teams against each other in a best of 3 series.

With an offense led by Jake Beckley (.301/.385/.414) and a strong rotation featuring Harry Staley (32-11,...
