1932 replay underway - using Baseball Reference dot com
I ditched my first attempted replay four games into the season and started over. The main problem I had was which pitchers to bring in as relievers -- especially as I had no idea when available pitchers would start next (I am using historical lineups with historical starters). So I was sometimes apt to bring in as a reliever someone who might start in the next couple days, and when he did start - even if the system said he was OK - he usually got bombed.
Other problems were lack of knowledge of which pinch hitters to use, how often to attempt to steal, to sacrifice bunt, pinch hit, fielding replacements, et al. Also, there was no quick reference to a team page showing each player's batting and hitting stats for the real 1932 season.
So the second attempt I have relied heavily on baseball reference dot com for easy access to each team's player stats: this helped immensely with the second set of problems I encountered.
And it was just as great a solution for my "who to bring in as a reliever" and "who are the upcoming starters" for each team? As one just has to check the historical box scores for upcoming starters and also see who were used as relievers. Not that I am slavishly trying to recreate specific relieve appearances (I am not) - but bringing in a reliever in so-and-so game who actually relieved on the date in real life (at least early in the season) has proved a good strategy -- that and just making sure I do not bring in as a reliever someone who actually started within the next couple of days.
So now behind the OOTP window I have an "AL" browser open with tabs to the baseball reference page for each of the 8 teams in the league (and a separate browser window that has 8 tabs open to the NL teams). This way I can constantly check which players did what (how many steals, how often they sacrificed, how often they batted (good for deciding who to pinch hit with).
And I can quick link to box scores to see about the pitching. By checking the box scores I also get a good sense as to when starters were relieved - if someone with good stamina was winning 12-6 then, sure, at least so far, it seems he would get a CG. But even if a good starter got in trouble in late innings, it seems another pitcher (i.e., either a designated reliever or a starter in between starts would come in for relief purposes).
Using this system, I am happier that the replay will be more realistic.
