Re: playbooks

I know there won't be individual playbooks (to start), but what about the possibility of turning on or off certain plays. Like if I never wanted my team to run a QB sneak, I could just turn that off. Or if that was all I wanted to run, I could turn off every single other play.

This would definitely make sense, especially if you have things like Spread Option plays that a team like for example the Broncos would never run with Peyton Manning at QB.

That kind of thing would just come naturally anyway, Manning isn't a mobile QB so they would just naturally not call plays where he runs, unlike say if they had Newton.

That makes sense. Of course regarding Manning he does run a naked bootleg very rarely lol:

How Many Plays & Formations

For the first addition of BTS, How many formations will be selectable, and how many plays may be included in each formation?

Can users select Single-Wing or other 'historical' formations?

Will players ever be able to design their own plays?

I don't know the exact number but quite a few.

Probably not as it will geared towards the modern NFL at first

I don't think we'll have for V1, however on the small off-chance you will, then it will be through editing some files rather than an in-game editor.

It would be cool to eventually get at least one historical type playbook. High school and College style playbooks are also obvious secondary additions.

Over the years I've been thinking about ways of making a football game (and writing precisely zero code, except for a couple of C# classes here and there...), because I've always wanted one like OOTP, how to do a play editor was something that annoyed me a lot (second only to how to generate play-by-play results, although I do have a semi-reasonable system for that in a notepad somewhere lol).

Obviously it would be very cool for such a thing to makes it's way into BTS (indeed in my opinion it has to eventually, preferably in version 2 if not version 1). As I imply though, I fully understand that it might take some tweaking.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite games was called PlayMaker Football and the core of the game was just that: a basic play editor. Real life playbooks are a lot more complicated than what the game would let you do, but it can be done! I'd be really excited if Beyond the Sideline could combine playbook creation/management with a great front office sim.

I really think that one priority for this should be a play/playbook editor. You get that together and release it into the wild, and you won't have to worry about doing the plays and playbooks yourself, because there are people (A few on this board I'm sure) who would quite happily invest a lot of time into creating realistic and varied playbooks. Save yourself the work on that end and outsource for cheap.

Playbooks

Most likely, over time, BTS will include varied playbooks with the game. Also, as mentioned by someone previously, there will probably be many fans/users creating playbooks that could be incorporated into the game if your code allows.

As fans our wish lists will be long and varied. The ability to make a "sub" playbook from the complete list would be beneficial. For instance the West Coast - short passing plays would make up the most of one type. The 'ol Ground Chuck various I formations for a dominate run game, and of course the four and five receiver sets for the pass heavy coaches (not even mentioning read option). Having this "sub" playbook you could then go into a game with your go to plays and only vary when you have a commanding lead and need to kill clock, or, in the unthinkable situation of being behind and needing to throw in desperation every down. The last couple of scenarios are somewhat tongue in cheek, hopefully you get my drift.

In summary, have the "sub" playbook a smaller version where you have ordered up your plays like toppings on a pizza and can avoid scrolling through a lot of plays to find the one you are looking for.

Count me in as a Alpha/Beta tester.

There's been a lot of talk about playbooks in the game, and justly so, but there has been virtually none about 'Game Plans'. This is something that I hope comes with V1.

Game Plans represent a team's specific usage of the playbook in terms of the team's preference for each specific play in the playbook. Something like this...

Play 1: 12%
Play 2: 11%
Play 3: 11%
Play 4: 10%
Play 5: 9%, etc.

There should be 2 versions of the game plan: a team's 'general' game plan for the season,, and an additional 'weekly' game plan for specific games on a team's schedule, to take advantage of the opposing team's weaknesses.

This would allow players to make the most out of the single existing playbook. Of course 'down & distance' would have to be taken into consideration also (Action Football does a good job of this).

Francis is going to have to do something like this for the game anyway. What I am suggesting here is that he merely open up access to the game plan for players to modify it themselves for each team during the season & each opposing team.

It would also be nice if players could upload their versions of the game plan so other players could use them also - let the community help out the game.

Let me guess: possibly in V1 or 2. Can't you guys hire someone to do some of the requests?
