Linux libchilkat not found
The game does not start from within Steam, and starting it from the folder results in this:
./ootp_linux64r ./ootp_linux64r: error while loading shared libraries: libchilkat-9.5.0.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory This library is in both the lib32 and lib64 folders. I copied the 64bit library to the OOPT folder, and got exactly the same result. I did add "tracemode no sound no3d nofacegen" to oopt17.sh. Same result. Any ideas on how I can play this game? I waited for a sale, and am eager to play, but I have no idea why I'm getting this result. I have posted this in the OOTP Steam discussions and here. Is nobody going to answer and provide a fix for this? I also copied libchilkat to ~/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. Still nothing, and I'm getting irked at no answer.

Did you run ootp_linux64r, or ootp17.sh? The latter uses the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to provide paths to the libraries to the linker.

This is what happens when I run the .sh file:
Code:

I'm pretty sure that's not necessarily fatal. I see you're running 16.04—I'm having trouble with Mint 18, which is based off of 16.04, so something that changed from previous Ubuntu releases seems to have broken things.
How far do you get? Does the game open, then crash while loading? Or does it fail for you earlier than it does for me? |

To the OOTP devs, I believe this is the same issue as in my thread, appearing on systems running Ubuntu 16.04 or other 16.04-based distributions. |

Yeah, no luck there either. I certainly hope this gets fixed; I don't want to downgrade to 14.04.

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 and yea, it fails out after the splash screen. I suspect there's zero people able to get this working in 16.04. There's been some issues with Steam in general in the latest version although steam itself seems ok for me. The title for this post is a bit misleading as you shouldn't be starting it directly from that file anyway.
It is unfortunate that I bought this and it doesn't work. I filed a support request and they ask for a debug tracefile but looking at the tracefile it definitely doesn't show much... Last edited by comat0se; 07-15-2016 at 06:44 PM. |

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply. Could you please try this? Warning in Debian after update :: Steam for Linux Valve Games and Steam for Linux Client
EDIT: Found another post which said this would not help. Apparently reinstalling the Steam client can help (uninstall Steam and reinstall with Code:
sudo apt update sudo apt install steam Last edited by Andreas Raht; 07-18-2016 at 11:31 AM. |

Here's the trace after the changes suggested in that thread. Here's the console output:
Code:
Running Steam on linuxmint 18 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc |

So. I just downgraded to 14.04, and the game runs flawlessly. I noticed that CIV:BE doesn't run on 16.04, either.
This does appear to be a problem either with OOTP or the Ubuntu devs. I do hope that the OOTP devs try to debug and fix this problem; I'd much rather run 16.04. |

Thank you! Do you use an Nvidia graphics card? It was mentioned that the Ubuntu 16 + Steam games + Nvidia combination does not work properly.

Most of my Steam games work fine—OOTP croaks for some reason. I wish I could find better logging for why. If Civ: Beyond Earth fails in the same way, it might be worth it to ask on the Steam forums, too.

Definitely a problem with the Steam runtime/library set: I activated one of my standalone Linux licenses, and it's working fine.

Installed the game initially on a 16.04 Ubuntu-based distro (Ubuntu MATE) and wasn't able to run it. But when I downgraded to a 14.04 Ubuntu-based distro (UberStudent), had no problems installing and running the game. Just happy now that I could run the game finally in Linux. (I'm a recent "convert" from Windows to Linux.) But I hope that eventually the game will run on any 16.04 Ubuntu-based distro... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
