Any magazine experts?

Hey,
I just realized I have two of Sports Illustrated's 1st ever issue...from '54 with Ed Mathews on the cover. Both look like they've never been read, and the baseball card pages are brand new looking, as sre the entire magazines. I'm just curious what, if anything, might be the monetary value of these things.
Thank-you very much,
Mark

You're kidding, right?

No sure how valuable, but I remember reading about that issue back in 87, when I started collecting cards. They were rare then.

Have you tried looking at completed auctions on Ebay?

Eric, That's a good idea...but I've already sent the magazines to your house for you to check them out. Please be sure to return them, and try not to crinkle the pages.

I'd do the E-Bay check, but I have no idea how to navigate E-Bay. I'm not looking to sell them, don't need cash and I'll just keep them for my baby to have when he grows up...I was just hoping maybe there is a dealer out there that knows their (aprox.) value. Can't imagine it's very much...they're just magazines.

Did you see the buy it now for $300 on ebay? That's probably closer to accurate.

Nope, I was born in April, 1954. My Dad (I'm helping him move) thought it a good idea to pick up a couple copies to save for me. He looked through one of them once, never touched the other, put them in a box in the basement, and there they've sat, forgotten about, since 1954, until last week when we started packing his stuff up.

You are one lucky dude.

My estimate would be somewhere around $300-$400 bucks, and quite possibly more.

That's a real good guess. I just got back from a 'high-end' store in a ritzy mall (Tiffany, Cartier, etc). The dude said they're not all that rare, except in the condition that they're in. He offered me $450 and $500. I told them I'm going to donate them to a charity auction benefitting Little League baseball, and he wrote me estimates for $885, and $950, for tax purposes.
Thanks
mark
