Cards by Mail

I know this might belong in another forum, but who reads the card/mem one anyways??

I figure I can post here of the autographed cards I recieve in the mail and we can discuss the players and potential value of the autographed cards, but more so the players

I send cards to players at their teams addresses with a envelope inside which already has a stamp on it. I started doing this when I was 12 and have recieved over 230 cards back only losing about 30 cards or so.

Today I got my first 2

C Jeff Mathis-Angels
SP- Zach Duke- Pirates

Duke has looked good this year.

That's cool. Which noteworthy player's signatures do you own?

I have quite a few good ones through mail-

Bobby Thomson(who hit the shot hear round the world)-its my favorite
Chipper Jones
Jeff Kent
Derek Lee
Moises Alou
Lance Berkman
Brandon Wood
Phillip Hughes
Tom Gordon
Fred Lynn
Sparky Anderson
Paul O'neil

Those are the ones I can come up with off the top of my head. I'm sure I have a few more I'm missing. I'll post more this weekend when I go home.

As far as just autographs obtained in person or in card packs-
Omar Vizquel, Dave Justic and Travis Fryman(all on one ball)
Matt Williams
Jason Isringuhausen, Jison Simontachii and Gary Gaetti(all on a hat)
David Wright(certified topps auto)
Orlando Cabrera(ceritfied Topps)
Jeff Bagwell(ball)

Most cards that I get signed are young guys still in the minors or lesser known MLer's. It's just easier and quicker to get the cards back normally.

Sent letters years back to all MLB teams and got the following auto's

Rey Sanchez, Mets.
Really nice large photo with an action shot taking up one half of the pic and a face pic taking up the other half, personally signed to myself.

Carlos Delgado, Blue Jays.
Nice action pic.

Ken Caminiti, Padres.
Postcard action shot.

Mike Matheny, Brewers.
Signed baseball.

FP Santangello, Expos.
Signed card.

Bob Watson, Yankees.
Kind of weird this one, asked for player auto's and the GM send's me his auto lol but he played the game so still cool.

Best one I got but wasn't a baseball auto was a Barry Sanders signed pic but my favourite auto I have is from Ralph Kiner who kindly replied with an hand written letter to me when I wrote to him.

Those are my favorite ones. When they actually take time to write back. The only ones who have done that for me are Bobby Thomson and Jay Howell.

How did you get in contact with Bobby Thomson ? After getting a reply from Kiner always thought of contacting the old time players. I'm running a Brooklyn Dodgers dynasty at the moment and was thinking of trying to contact players from 1957 who are still alive and posting their responses on my blog.

His address should be on the web. There is a book published with alot of retired players home addresses and people normally put the top ones on the web. Just do a search for it.

Let us know how you get on, as the age of the internet and ebay made any differences in players signing autos ? Alot of football (soccer) players over here either don't sign or will only sign one item. Man Utd the biggest team over here even stopped players from signing items at their training base because people were getting autos and putting them up on ebay.

It hasn't really affected baseball I don't guess. I get the same amount of responses as I did when I was 12 or so(9 years ago). Baseball cards that are signed don't go for much on ebay unless they are certified. Some players will only sign one thing. But most will sign two or three. When I was 14, I think, Greg Vaughn signed all 5 cards I put in the envelope .

Garret Anderson is by far the best signer in baseball. I have gotten his three times. Once, he didn't send back the card I sent, and instead sent a signed ticket for a game against the Tigers with him on it. It was a pretty pricey ticket too, something like $65.00.

Used to be the same here, I used to get every programme signed by the home and away team, players got used to me that much they'd strike a convo up with me but if you ask a player for an auto now some of them look at you like your asking for their life savings. Up until the last say 4-5 years I'd never been turned down for an auto even players from foreign teams who couldn't speak English used to sign, all you needed to do was put your thumb up show them a pen and they'd happily sign.

Got in a card from Ian Snell and two from Mark Teahen today.

VERY NICE

The best was one of Teahen's. It is his Rookie Bowman Chrome card and he signed it in blue sharpie.

Ever send any requests to the minor league teams ? Was wondering what ratio of replies you or someone else gets from minor league players.

Yea I send a few. I try not to send to many to minors though. The player movement from like high A to low A etc hurts chances sometimes. But for guys I know will be at that level, I have never not gotten a card back.
