Crash on Start-up

The game crashes on me as soon as I double-click the icon or "run as administrator". I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The crashes are due to DEP and though the executable that crashes is OOTP9.exe, the module is elicen40.dll. Have done the following: installed, crashed on start-up, restarted, crashed on start-up, uninstalled, restarted, downloaded from a different location, reinstalled, crashed on start-up, restarted, crashed on start-up.

Here's the problem's signature from the "OOTP Baseball 9 has stopped working dialog:

Hey, Ankit, I remember all of your databases from the old days and used them many, many times.

I'm not sure I know how to help in this area, but is it possible that you're having one of the reported problems with elicensing? Are you using AVG Anti-Virus and is it somehow blocking the e-license file?

The crash is being caused by Windows DEP. When I turn it off for OOTP9.exe, the program doesn't even launch. Not a single process starts when I double-click the program. Also, my anti-virus is Avast and I have an exception in Windows Firewall for OOTP9.exe.

I am almost certain that elicense is the culprit with bad code.

Ankit,

Do the steps in this FAQ from last year help your issue?

battists,

Turning off DEP for all but essential services worked and I was able to launch the game. However, that is not a good solution as it makes the computer's security weaker. Have you discussed or looked into ways to program the offending code better so that it does not trigger DEP? Since I can replicate this issue endlessly, if you can develop a patch, I am willing to test it and provide crash reports if it doesn't fix it. Regardless, turning off DEP is not a good solution.

As there has been no further posts in this thread for 4 days, I'll move it to closed. If anyone has problems with DEP and launching OOTP then we can reopen it.
