Rosters/Players wrong

This is the PC version of the game, having started a new 2008 MLB game. I was using the new executable, although had not done a full re-install when the issue first occurred.

Played the game for several dozen hours without any problem. I then started getting the error where the messages.dat file could not be loaded, but I deleted the file as per instructions in another thread, and it was resolved.

Played another 5-10 hours and during a save, the game crashed. Reloaded the game (the finalizing stage now take several minutes to complete) and the rosters are incorrect, and the player links take you to the wrong player page (e.g. clicking on Chase Utley takes you to Ryan Dempster). Within a few clicks (including trying to advance time), the game will crash with a generic error message.

I've de-fragged my drives and have over 30 gig of free space. Re-installed the game several times using the new version. I had originally installed the game in a custom path, but have used the default path for the re-install and then pointed to the original data directory so I could use the existing save game.

The problem persists no matter what I've tried.

In other words, "help".

The problem with messages.dat will be solved with Patch 2. If you still have problems like this after the patch comes out, can you start a new thread.
