Soon: AuHOF2007
I also have been coding a new HOF program.
The rundown on how this will work is as follows: At the end of the season, you run my program. It then looks at everyone that retires and adds them to the retired database. It will loosely decide if the player has a chance for the HOF. It will be simple checks, just to get rid of the no-gooders. It will check things like at bats, average, wins, etc. It will not get rid of anyone that has a possible change to make the HOF. Obviously, if a guy only played 7 seasons, he is not a HOF candidate. Now, my program will remember what year this player retired and then 5 years later, he is eligible for the HOF. When you run my program, it will then find the people that are eligible for the HOF THIS year and do a couple things. For solo leagues, it will basically just let you preview each players career stats and then give it a HOF rating score. This is based on tons of stats, including; hits, power, speed, fielding, popularity, etc. You can then set the threshold on what score it takes to get in the HOF. This way, you can change things depending on what year you are in. You can also change the way the program awards the HOF points. So, in 1910, you can have triples worth a lot more than home runs, or average count much more than power. (Hopefully I can figure out a way to implement the modifiers to automatically adjust this). The other plan for the solo leaguer would be for you to manually give them a score. Then once all of the scores have been assigned, you decide how many make the HOF this year. Rules would be in place to allow the people that did not make it to be on the ballet next year, if they get a certain amount of points. Now for the online leagues. Of course, the commish can use either one of the above plans or he can use another plan that I am implementing. This would be a ballot that would be created and then could be sent to each team owner, who would vote on the players. The commish would enter the votes into the program and go from there. I plan on doing some HTML pages also for the online league, a little Hall of Fame type section. I also see special members of the Hall of Fame, like managers, coaches, etc. As you can tell, this is going to be a huge program, so it may be a week or so before I get around to getting it complete. I am currently coding the HOF point system, which is the most difficult part of the program, as it is going to be completely configurable, as shown: This is the start of the INI file, so, if a player had 2550 hits, he would get 1 point. If he had 3005 hits, he would get 5 points, 4005 hits and he gets 13 points. Same thing with HRs, if he had 605 home runs, he would get 3 points. Other points included would be; All-star games, MVP awards, player of the week/month awards, hitting streaks, leader-board appearances, rank in the top 10 in categories, fielding, stealing. [hits] 2500,1 2700,1 3000,3 3500,3 4000,5 4500,5 [homeruns] 500,1 600,2 650,1 700,2 750,1 800,2 [triples] 170,1 200,2 250,3 300,4 350,2 400,2 [doubles] 600,3 650,1 700,3 750,1 800,5 850,3 [rbis] 1600,1 1800,1 2000,3 2200,3 2400,3 2500,3

Let me tell you, I can't WAIT for this one! As a solo player, I've been wishing for OOTP to add expanded options to the HOF induction for a few versions now. Keep up the (heap superlatives here) work!

Just a thought: Do you think you would be able to include a calculation for Win Shares; EPP (Extended Peak Performance - total win shares over the player's best 10 best win shares seasons); and CWS (Comparative Win Shares = EPP + 10% of players total career win shares)?
... Or is that much too much?

I am still working on this program. The HOF point system is designed and working well. I have to design the interface to input the configurations.

Looking forward to it. I am not particularly fond of the current default in-game HOF selection criteria.

Very nice. Can't wait to try it out in my solo league.
One question. Will it work with existing leagues? For example if I am in 1921 now when I first run it will it look at all retired players since 1901 or just those retiring in the first year I run the program?

It will look at all retired players that meet a certain critera.
Players with less than 2000 at bats (I think it is) are ignored. Also players with career batting averages less than .250. The average is configurable. You can also set the critera for OBP and SLG.

Sadly, I have only had one of the subscribers respond to the program at all. I had quite a few issues with him running it, but I now have added error trapping throughout it to help me troubleshoot with the errors.
It works fine on my league(s). I now have it being completely configuratable using a neat option layout screen. You can change the values of each thing easily and then see how it works. It is all stat based, and I think it gives you a very good feel for the best of the best with the numbers, but I want to add more. Fielding: It gives you XX points for each Glove Award you get, but that is not enough. 2nd best glove in the AL don't get you any points. I need help with fielding. I never have been into fielding stats at all. Stats there can lie. Less people try to steal on Pudge because of his arm reputation. A fielder make make more errors because he tries to make the harder catches, etc. I think speed is pretty well covered, but what about personality? Unless you have been doing yearly CSV dumps, then I have no way to see how this guys personality was during the course of his career. I can't ask the other players. I can only base it on what is personality rating is when he retired. IF, it stays the same. Of course, the guy that owns OOTP (That's you!) still has the final call with my program. My program is just suppose to help you make that decision.

When I try to run the program, it gives me a message saying that it can't find AU2007.txt
It does this even after an uninstall and re-install

Please send tech problems to the Newsletter. Just reply to it and let me know the issues.
Targy helped me and we got the program up and running on his system. It should work fine now. Delete the AU2007HOF.TXT file, if it exists. If you get an error with that file, let me know. I have it setup to report any errors, so it should be easy to debug. Today I started to add the code to add players from the AUHOF. You can right click on a selected player in the ELIGIBLE list and you can either 1) Remove 2) Add to AUHOF - all this does now is add him to a list so he does not show up in the ELIGIBLE list again. I will next write the code to add him to the AUHOF list. You will be responsible to load OOTP and manually add him to the HOF. You should have set the HOF standards to unreachable numbers in OOTP. Here is how this is going to work, when it gets together. On a certain date, which is undecided at this time, you will run my program and it will scan for RETIRED players that did it this year. It will then add them to the HOF CUE and note the year. In 5 years, when you run my program, it will then give you a chance to add this guy to the HOF, reject him or let him sit on the list a year. My program will give him a stats rating, which is a pretty good determination of if he is even worthy. This is called the HOF points. The carry over option to add him next year can be used or not used. It is up to you. I feel it will be more for an online league, as they will be voting on if a player makes it or not. Subscribers to my newsletter, please reply to the newsletter and let me know you have tried it, if it works, errors, anything. No feedback is delaying the work on this program. I will be sending out a new newsletter Sunday afternoonish, giving details of the program and the link to run it from.

A little hiccup in my life here, as I woke up Sunday morning and decided to clean my CPU heat sink. I could not boot after that. I ended up having to go get a replacement MB and went ahead and picked a very nice case with the CompUsa logo on the box. 79 bucks for the case with a 500 watt power supply and 7 bays!!
Anyhoot, I had to set up Windows again on the new motherboard and that means re-installing all my apps again. I just installed the programming language, so that part is complete and I did have all my source code backed up, so nothing was lost. I did lost a 320gig hard drive, well, 120gig worth of information, mostly music, downloads and misc stuff that I save. However, I lost all my leagues. I could have saved them, but just did not have the time to copy them off the hard drive before I formatted. No biggie, just hampers me, as I now have to create a few leagues to test the data on. As excited as everyone sounded when I announced this program, I am getting NO feedback on it. This slows down the progress of the program and if it continues, I put it on the back burner.

However I did sneak in some time today to finally run the program works great so far. I have one question, does the program have to be run at the start of each year? Also, where are the data files that contain the HOF candidates? Last, I assume that once the program selects a player for the HOF that player is added manually by the user within the game, right? Thanks and keep up the good work. I think this will be a great addition to fictional users such as myself. I will get a donation over to you for your hard work. Thanks! ![]()
