Question
When a hint gets reached does it show up on the Standings page. is 5 hits in a game one of the parameters because Jim Rice on my team had 5 hits and when I got to the Standings page there was no hint there...I was just wondering when and where does a hint show up....

You are misunderstanding how it works.
When the program runs, it scans many different files. 1st, it scans all of the player's history files. Inside the history file, it looks for key words, like 'Round 1', 'career', 'goes', 'was the'. If if finds one, it then checks the date the event happened. With the 'goes', that would be for the 5 hits. As in 'Jim Rice goes 5-5...' Now with the 5 hits, it will ONLY add this to the hint file when it has happened 'this' year. While other events, such as a milestone is added based on the 'year limit' parameter. It adds all of these 'hints' into a file called hints.txt. This file is used be displayed during the autosimming, saving of game, loading of game or other 'delays' in the game. It replaces the old tips like 'There was never a no-hitter at Forbes Field'. When it comes up is entirely random.

Yes and no.
What was the hint about? I have not tweaked the entire list on the minor leagues yet to filter it out in every category yet. The player's history may be a little harder to filter, as it is just text records that I am filtering, but I think I know how to do it. How did the program work for you? Did you find any useful information about your league that you were unaware of? How many tips did it generate? The total is shown in the title bar of the application after it creates the tip file. Can you post your tip file here, or at least part of it?

How long should "Compiling player's information" take? It says "This may take a minute or two..." But mine has been going for several minutes. My league is twenty or so years old, but (if I understood the option I set correctly) I only wanted events from last year through the current year. Did I do something wrong, is my -- nevermind
![]() As I was typing the compiling finished. My feedback will come later.

Run it again and let it update to new version and it should not put in the AAA players if the check mark is checked.
I tested it on a league with 1 level of minors and it worked fine. Let me know if it works fine on the other minors.

Quick question. Do you have to do a CSV dump everytime you run the program or can you run the program while it is still running..Also at the end of a season what minimum amount of items do you have to check when you do a CSV dump

You should do a CSV dump before you run my program. A couple of reasons. One is that a lot of the information I use is pulled from the dump files. Some of the information is taken from the player's history files, while other information is taken from other text files.
It could also cause problems if your dump is not the latest and there are new players as it cannot look their name up, since they did not exist when the dump was made. That part is error trapped, but it could cause it to skip over stuff. There is no need to run my program when OOTP is opened or running. The hint file I create is loaded upon startup by OOTP, so you would not see the new hints until you reloaded the game. (The actual game, not just the league) I usually do a CSV dump before I close OOTP every time, so the csv files are current. Make it a habit. It only takes 20 seconds or so to do it. I normally leave all of my settings set as default in my program, at the start or the end of the season. The parameters are there to just make the hint file contain more/less information, as desired. I am trying to find out if there is a limit on how large the hint file can be, but have yet to get an answer. I have ran OOTP with 1200 tips with no issues. The year limit is designed for the older leagues. The year limit is mainly used for the milestones. If you have a 60 year old league, you will get tons of milestones and achievements. This just allows you to tweak down how many you get. Some events are set as 'ignore date', such as no-hitters, career ending injuries, stuff like that. My thought was that it would throw those names at you year after year, to help you know your leagues history. TO sum it all up, you just have to try different parameters and see how it works for you at that time. Remember, the utility is designed so you can have fresh hints about your league, so they never get old. I was ready to hit someone the next time I saw 'There has never been a no-hitter in Forbes field.' One option I want to also add is to download other hint files. The hint file is just a bunch of lines of text. With a limit of 256 characters per hint. So, if you had a collection of jokes in a text file, you can put rename it to hints.txt and put it in the right place and it would use that. I pictured stuff like; jokes, bible quotes, famous quotes, baseball trivia. I want to find a collection of text files that I can add to the program.

AUHistoryHint HINT:
After you click START and it creates the hint file and you do not have 'hide results' checked, you can click on any of the lines that have a # in them to view the box score (if the box scores are saved). This is pretty cool to see those 'interesting' games that my program finds.

A hint to keep an eye for:
A pitcher pitching 8 innings or more of no-hit ball and LOSING the game. It is programmed in, just have not seen it happen yet. One of my favorite hints is the #1 draft hint. Since I autosim 30-60 years before I start playing, I find it interesting to see those #1 draft picks. Sometimes you say, 'who the hell was that' and then have to stop the sim to go look him up.

Updated it today adding a new checkbox to 'check dumps'. This is for the people that have used my advice to do a yearly CSV dump. It checks those dumps and gives you some more stuff. For now, it gives you the most hits a team in one game without scoring a run. It breaks it down between home and away games. At the same time, I changed the year one to also break it down between home and away.
It also reports the RECORD low combined hit total for both teams. My record was 2, which was a no-hitter where the other team got only 2 hits. The most hits without scoring a run was a 1-0 win by the 1942 Yankees over the Athletics. The A's got 14 hits in 14 innings and also had 5 walks. They left 18 runners on base. The game ended when Swanson hit a 1-1 pitch into the short bleachers 337 feet away for the walk off. I sure hope everyone listened to my long ago advice to do the yearly dumps. When doing a yearly dump, configure it (under almanac settings) to dump every year. Configure it NOT to dump the following files for speed. Any item that has the word HISTORY in it or the word CAREER in it, DO NOT save those. That would be like team_history... or league_history... Those records will never be used by me in a almanac dump, as they can be checked in the normal dump. It saves a few seconds each year. The yearly csv dump only takes 30 seconds or so, but, IMHO, it is a very smart move to save it. NOTE: My program will work correctly and not error if you skip any years of doing a dump, so if you did not do a yearly dump for the 1st 20 years and then turned it off, it will work fine. Only 2 people have commented on this program after it has been released. Please provide feedback on how it works or how to improve it or even on stuff it pointed out to you that did not exist. It makes me happy to see things like that, almost as happy as that paypal e-mail I get when someone donates.

If you have done yearly dumps, just leave them in place and hit that check mark (in the new version) and it will find it and use it automatically. You will see those entries at the bottom of the result table.
I do not access the champion file, but I will look at it. Maybe something like this: In 1957, the Detroit Tigers won the World Series. MVP that year was Al Kaline, Pitcher of the year was Jim Bunning and ROY was Hank Aaron. Or, In 1968, the Detroit Tigers won the World Series. They were 102-60 for the year. I will look at it.

I'm really liking it so far. another winner of yours, it seems.
One critique (maybe): it seems one of the names I saw had a couple "jumbled" letters in it, perhaps where accented letters belonged. Is that possibly a bug?

I added a few tidbits, tweaked some of the career stuff, like not showing the 1000th or 1500th run or rbi. Added a few more parameters to set.
I also fixed some buggy code and added tool tips. Put your cursor over any item and it will tell you what that option means. I will be adding more tidbits during this week, time permitting, but will be focusing my attention back to the HOF program starting this week. The find of the week was a spring training game I had where a team pitched a no hitter and lost! Well, that happens a few times, but check out the game line. Wow!! The ignore spring training function is disabled right now, as it was causing some other problems. I will fix that. ![]()
