Some more feedback:

(first of all, i don't have the program in front of me right now, so maybe this option already exists, and I've just forgotten it). I'd like to filter out certain events -- namely 5-hit games and POWs and POMs. They don't interest me on the historical scale. Any way to do this?

The latest version does not display the player of the week anymore and it has an option to NOT display the players/pitchers of the month. I also removed the 1000th and 1500th rbi/run scored... so it starts at 2000

I will add a parameter for the hits, so you can just set it higher

This program found it for me. It was actually a spring training game, but did not have the PBP save on. But I did note that there were 10 walks... I will post the box later...

When you run the program does it override the previous version because I ran the program after the end of the year and I set it to only go back 3 years and it is still giving me hints from 10 years ago. I will run it again and see if the problem still exists

Ok I did a new CSV dump and I ran the program and I am in the year 1980 and set the year limit at 1977. I did not hide the results and I am looking and there are entries from all the way back to 1961.. so for some reason the year limit does not work

The limit is set to only work on certain items. For instance, the #1 draft picks each year do not use the date setting. Same with no-hitters and other stuff like that. That is by design.

I wanted some items from the all-time history, to remind you of the greats. An after thought is that I guess you will get sick of seeing that Babe Ruth hit his 700th home run on June 29th, 1931.

I will add another override on that.

I just want to say that this is an awesome utility and adds a great deal to the game play. The only thing I have to complain about is that for players (mostly foreign players) that have weird characters in their names (like the little ` in Martinez or something) it shows up all screwy...it adds like a @ symbol and other wierd characters and it sometimes hard to read. I don't know if anybody else has found this problem or not, but I just wanted to make you aware of it

Thanks, glad you enjoy it.

I am aware of the funny character problem. I tried one solution last night, but it failed. I will try another one next chance I have, maybe tonight or tomorrow evening.

Larry,

What encoding are you using to write the file out. I found that when I was doing the players importer I had to use UTF-8 to read in the CSVs correctly and so you may need to use that to write back with.

Even though you are a Red Sox fan, good call.

I actually was using UTF-7 to import them in and everything looked fine, so yesterday I had fixed it to export out using the UTF-7, but it caused even more garbage. So, I changed it to import it in with UTF-8 and export it out with the same.

Falk, give it a try now and see if the problem went away. (Besides, I added a couple more tidbits)

This program is awesome and the new up date is great..one thing. Is there a way to stop my AAA hints from showing up..I check top level only and I see some AAA milestones....

Yeah, I knew this question was coming. Heh heh.

Those events are taken from a player's history. So that is why the top level mark is not working on it. A player will have the AAA stuff in his history even if he is in the majors. However, my program knows what the names of the minors are, so I can add another checkie thingie to remove all minor league events.

My week is being slammed so far (after a slow week last week), spent half the day on the road today and have three computers to work on tomorrow, so I more and likely will not have a new release until the 4th. That is unless I have another sleepless night.

Do you do like I do? I run it then I sit there and read all the hints!! Or do you just wait and let the hints surprise you while you are playing the game?

I also need to hide the hints at the start up. I changed the way some of the hints are loaded to being loaded when you start the program, as it speeds it up.

Targy,

Odd.. I have a fictional league with one level of minors and I am not seeing any AAA stuff at all in my file. I added a routine to skip any strings that contained XXX, where XXX is your minor league name. However, it did not work as expected and put in a bunch of old stuff. I am too tired to look further into it.

Do me a favor, e-mail me your hint.txt file and also e-mail me your leagues.csv file.

E-mail them to webcomedian@msn.com

I did not post the update, since what I added did not work.

I am going to sleep.

That error should not happen now Targy.

Also, try that new NO HISTORY button. I don't think it works right, but give it a shot.

Thanks... added some error trapping because of errors that were happening if you ran the program on the 1st of the year.

If you get an error, restart the program and click the DEBUG button. Let me know what section it was working on when it crashed. I do not really need the rest of the information, just what section it was working on.

I added a few more tid bits, but I won't say what they are, as I do not want to spoil the surprise.

Also, make sure that you have done a CSV dump before you run the program. It will generally be ok if you don't, but if any players are added to the league or leave the league (delete players that do not make the majors), it could cause a problem if they had a history file. I am pretty sure that I have that trapped well enough to avoid any errors, but be on the safe side.

The program does NOT write the hint file until it goes through all of the functions, so if it errors, the hint file will be unchanged.

I still not found a solution to the funny character problem, but you may want to look through the setup, there is an option NOT to export the fancy characters out to the CSV files. Let me know how that works out while I attempt to find a solution to that.

Happy 4th of July.

A couple of late night notes:

If you run my program between 1-1-xxxx and the start of pre-season, some of the information may not be correct. Actually, it is just the box score number.

It looks like the CSV files are not 'reset' for the new year until this date. So, you will see last year stuff in there, even though it is this year. It may display some funky things in there also due to this.

Not much I can do about that, but it really is not bad, as it populates the file with information.

I also added a link to this forum from the program, so you have no excuse to not post here!!

If you think one of the default numbers I use is too high or too low, please let me know. Also, some of the items do not have parameters you can set, if you feel they need one, let me know.

The parameter section up top is looking all hodge podge now. But that is ok for now, as I will re-organize it when I have finished adding parameters, but the way I am digging up stuff, that may be in 2011.

A couple of new interesting tidbits:

Most hits allowed by a pitcher in one game while winning the game.
Games where a pitcher struck out more than 11 batters and did NOT walk one.

I added about 10-15 or so tid bits this morning for hitters and pitchers for game stuff. Some you may never see, but if it happens, you will!!

Also, please let me know how many hints you are getting. I have ran it and had 1200 hints put in the file. I am thinking that may cause a small delay loading, let me know if you notice any delays when you have a large amount.

When you first press START, it looks at the players history folder. It reads in every single file name in that folder. That is when it says: It may take a minute or two. Of course times vary depending on the speed of your machine. That is the longest delay. However, if you have 10,000 or more players, it will go through the history file for every one. That could take a while. It shows you progress every 1000 just to let you know it did not lock up.

I am going to add an option to speed it up. Here is the way it would work:

If you run the program and it looks at a players history, and does not find anything 'worthy' in his history and the player is retired, it will add it to a collection. This collection will be saved and the next time you run it for THIS league, it will skip over reading in those player's history. This will be saved in a file, so it can always be reset by simply deleting the file. I will also add an option to 'skip retired players'. This would just be for reading the history file.

There is no way that I can speed up the first part that I can think of yet. Actually, maybe there is, but it would require some re-writing. Right now, I think the program is fine in it's speed, at least on my machine.
