Bullpen AI

I haven't seen this anywhere in tech so I figured I'd post it. There have been a few threads in the main forum about the bullpen AI and the misuse of pitchers.

For the most part, closers are being used in roles they shouldn't be. For example they'll come in the 7th inning and pitch to one hitter and be replaced. The closer should really only come in with the expectation of finishing the game in the 8th or 9th and a lead. They could also be used in extra innings by the home team or when most of the pen is depleted.

The other area is a bug where the relievers will come in and only throw to one hitter. They'll continue to do this and you'll end up with 5 pitchers with .1 innings and the last guy having to finish the last 3 innings because no one is left.

I'll see if I can get some others to post examples and their idea of fixes to it to better grasp the issues with the bullpen AI.

This is not unusual. Figuring that no save can be recorded for the home team once the game reaches the bottom of the ninth or goes into extras, the manager will most likely bring in his closer (the best available bullpen option) to pitch the ninth and possibly even the tenth.

Take a look at this thread for an example of bad bullpen AI:

Pitcher usage in blowouts.

Here is that game boxscore, notice the closer pitching for 6 innings.

I've also noticed problems with pitcher use late in the game, as well as unusual intentional walks, some coming as early as the fifth inning. On a couple of occasions (I've only played through May in the league I'm doing, playing out every game) a lefty is brought in the face a lefty, then intentionally walk him to face a right-hander. Reliever use is vital to strategy, and therefore to the enjoyment of the game by people who like to manage every game.
