Free Agency AI

I'm sure this has been brought up many times by now, but since I can't find a post for it and don't see it in the patch fixes, I'll bring it up again.

The Free Agency AI in OOTP 2006 is way too easy. Whereas I thought the FA AI in OOTP 6.5 was next to impossible, we really need a mean between these extremes.

If I offer 10 players their asking price, chances are all of them are going to sign with me. If I offer 10 players 80% of their asking price, I'm probably still going to get 7 or 8 of them.

It just doesn't seem like there is any competition from computer teams in signing free agents. I shouldn't be able to win a championship in this game simply because I made offers to every player on the market.

Furthermore, relievers come very cheap in the game. Too cheap. I could build an ace bullpen (4 relievers and a closer) for the cost of what a top closer should cost alone. They also resign cheap too. I can lock up a reliever who has pitched consistently under 2.50 for around 1.5mil for as many years as I please.

I'm sorry for the awfully slow response to this thread.

Obviously, some time has passed since you posted this issue, and the 1.0.2 patch has since been released as well. Are you still seeing this issue? I have not been able to reproduce it so far.

Please let me know!

Thanks,

Steve

There still is very little competition in signing players, but the player endurance bugs have been fixed related to asking salary.

I think its too easy as well. I rarely get a message from a player saying that another team has given him a better offer. I usually offer them what they are asking for, they'll send me a message saying they like the offer but have to think about it (or something similar), and then within the next couple of days they will sign with me.

I don't know if the AI teams aren't making offers or if they just aren't being aggresive enough.

and furthermore, just because I have traded or released a player doesn't mean they 100% will not sign me again. This is especially the case when a player becomes a FA while we are negotiating a contract. While there are many instances where they should refuse, it needs to be varied a little bit.

The way FA is handled right now, its just not very hard to build a winning team at all. Try to free up as much cash room as possible, and just let the FA offers ride at the player's ask (in some cases, below their ask) to all the top players on the market and volia: a championship caliber team. This might work for the New York Yankees, but I've made it work with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. cmon!

I think I'm going to close this issue out for now. While it's not "fixed" per se, we're doing ongoing work on the FA AI, and there's not a specific issue here, just some ongoing tuning...

I would be interested in seeing if this situation continues in the latest version of the patch though.

While I have not yet simmed a full season with the new patch to see how the FA AI has improved, I have noticed that I am unable to resign players in their final year. Not sure if I have missed a deadline or something (sim date is around July 26th right now) and is posted here:

Uh, but you said it was moot in that thread. Is it still an issue?

Since this is such a subjective topic, I'd like to wait until the final 1.0.2 patch comes out (tomorrow I believe), and then get some people to report back with feedback on how the FA AI looks.

I'm still willing to give feedback to Markus about this, but I'm not exactly getting a deluge of people agreeing that the FA AI is too easy at this point...

Thanks,

Steve

We have a rule that states that Tech Support threads wherein we have not received a response within 7 days will be closed.

This one meets this criteria, so I'm closing this.

If you want to discuss it again, just PM me with the thread link, and I'll re-open. (Don't just say "Hey, reopen my thread." I need to know the URL, thanks!)
