Here's a reason we're still getting illegal roster errors (particularly Cuba)

So I've been pretty frustrated by the continuing illegal roster errors, and I've been trying to get to the bottom of what causes them. I knew there had to be some specific cause, because they are so consistently happening to the Cuban Baseball League. Tonight, I finally found one big cause.

The year on the draft date is only incremented when the league goes into the pre-season. However, at the beginning of the game, all leagues start in pre-season mode whether they should be or not. This means that if your draft date occurs BEFORE your preseason date, then the year on the amateur draft will get out of sync with the actual calendar.

For instance, I started a default Cuban league in 2006. The date for the amateur draft is June 15th, 2006. I advanced through the first year. There was a draft on June 15th, 2006. However, the next year, the draft date stayed at June 15th 2006, because it doesn't increment until the beginning of pre-season, which is in September. So June of 2007 passed with no draft because the draft date was still set to 2006. The same thing would happen in 2008, when the draft date would still be set to 2007.

This is what eventually starves the Cuban League of players. This will happen in any league where the draft date precedes the pre-season "trigger" date. Obviously you can intervene if you know this is happening and fix this problem, but the game shouldn't let it happen. The draft date should be incremented on Jan 1, or after the draft itself, not on some arbitrary "pre-season trigger date".

I agree it's a problem, but until it gets fixed in the template, you can avoid it by setting the first draft date to 2007 when you create the league.

The problem is not with the template...the problem is with the game logic. There should be no reason that you can't have your draft date set whenever you want to.

The problem is in the template in so far as that's the most likely place for a fix to the immediate issue of drafts being pre-dated, at least for a patch to 2006. (I wouldn't speculate about 2007.)

I understand that there are ways around it in the configuration and templates. I brought it up here because it's clearly a bug, and needs to be reported, assignd a TT#, and eventually fixed, whether in a patch or in 2007. There should be no circumstance where the game loses track of the ammy draft, and stops holding it.

Oh, I definitely agree, and I think I'm no great fan of the "all relevant dates increment on the day that pre-season starts" approach, but I suspect there's a conscious design decision here, so the overall issue likely isn't limited just to the amateur draft. In other words, a fix to it may not take the shape you're looking for (i.e. "The draft date should be incremented on Jan 1, or after the draft itself, not on some arbitrary "pre-season trigger date"), but rather the more kludgy nature I'm talking about, depending on how much other stuff also hinges on that pre-season triggering.

Sorry it's taken so long to answer this.

The draft date problem was fixed in a patch. With that knowledge, I'm going to close this. If you think I'm in error to do so, feel free to PM me and tell me that the patch didn't indeed fix this specific problem.
