spring training

In 6.5, the spring training allowed for you to decide to teach a player a new position and what to work on for the players on your roster. Did I skip something or is there a way to do this?

During spring training games, play the player at the position you want him to learn.

That's right. In 6.5, since you didn't play out spring training games, at the start of the regular season the player just suddenly wound up with a rating at his new position. In OOTP2006 it works differently.

In OOTP2006 if you play him at a new position his position rating will move up slowly ... VERY slowly in most cases ... as he learns game by game. I had a 90 rated RF whom I put in LF in spring training. By the end of spring training, despite playing there nearly every day, he only reached a 26 rating in LF.

You can do the same thing in the regular season but players "learn" positions faster in spring training. In general, before trying to teach an OF how to play an IF position or vice versa, look at the IF and OF ratings. They let you know if the position change is likely to work. For example, an outfielder with low IF ratings (arm, range, etc.) will likely never develop into a good 3B.

As far as I know, there's no way in OOTP2006 to concentrate in spring training on power instead of defense, or eye instead of contact, like you could in 6.5.

Hope this helps.
