i have trouble dling an online league file

i am following steps that are supposed to work but i can't dl the original online file as an owner not commissioner.

Can u outline the steps needed to complete this process. i am using Vista and Winzip- could this be a part of the problem in attempting to dl and unzip ot extract the file.

Which folder are you extracting the league into?

good question that makes me wonder if i was dling into the game or documents. i should be dling into documents sports interactive/ootpbaseball2007/data/saved_games

but you tell me altho i will try again and make sure that i am in documents rather than the game folder

ok i was dling into the documents,si,ootp etc. but i think it is best if you outline the steps for me because i simply cannot unzip the file. but the steps have to be exact and once again is it possible that either Vista or Winzip could be the problem?

i am in 6.5 leagues and i just noticed that when i dl a 6.5 league file it is called a zip file but 2007 files are called tat or tar.tar or tar.gz. does this affect anything with wiinzip

The directory that you are trying to unzip into seems correct, as long as the person who created the zip file zipped up the league folder in its entirety.

Neither Vista nor Winzip should be causing you problems. I don't believe that those file extensions should cause problems.

I can't give you exact steps to unzip a file. Your version of Winzip is probably different than mine. You do need to open up the file and extract it into the specified directory. It's usually fairly straightforward.

If you describe exactly what you are doing and where you are getting stuck, we could probably figure it out.

ok i had success dling a file when it was named as a zip file but when the files are named

e.g. UMBL.lg.tar or UMBL.lg.tar.tar it doesn't work at least doesn't work with what i am doing.

ok i dl the file and place it in docs/si/ootp/data/saved_games. It is now in that folder as a winzip file. Now the process says to extract it or unzip. Nothing that i have tried will work. the problem seems to be that when it is named as tar instead of zip the normal unzip processes don't work. Any ideas?

Either find a more recent version of WinZip or try something like WinRar or 7-Zip.

i have 11.1 of winzip which i think is most recent but that doesn't work at least not with what i am doing.

I installed 7-zip but have no idea of what to do so once again i dled a file into saved_games. Now what exactly are the next steps to get this file in the game.

1. Install Power Archiver.
2. Download your league file to your hard drive.
3. Right click on the tar.gz league file and select "extract" via Power Archiver
4. Make sure the contents of what extracts are in a folder with a ".lg" extension. If not, fix it.
5. copy the whole folder to your saved_games folder
6. Open the game and load the league into the game
7. If it's an online league, you will be prompted to select your team and to input your password

That's it. For subsequent post-sim files, you can use the in-game feature that automatically downloads and extracts for you.

ok this last post really helped and i got the file (league) into the game but it was a real hit and miss so let me point out what i did because i think there is a simple way to do it.
i dled power archiver into program files.
the file that i dled was called UMBL.lg.tar - no gz is that of any importance?

i placed the dled file into the saved_game.

I created a file named UMBL.lg

ok here is where it got a liitle tricky- extracting. i right clicked but did not actually see power archiver. what is the exact step after you right click to extract? what do u actually click. the obvious alternatives are

Open with 3 choices int exp, winzip or "the most powerful freeware archive utility" - which i assume is the power archiver.

the other alternative is to extract and there are a number of choices but one is the doc,si, ootp etc saved game.

which is the proper selection or is it something else

You "created a file named UMBL.lg"? - Not sure why you did that. Aren't you trying to get an online league file into the game?

If so, please follow carefully:

1. make sure you have installed Power Archiver, not downloaded to program Files. Big difference there.
2. after installation, go and find your league file (UMBL.lg.tar)
3. right click on it and you'll see some little "yellow vice over a folder" looking icons that say extract to, extract here and then the third choice is extract to:C:\documents... Select that one.
4. when the extraction finishes, you will see a new folder show up. Open it. and you should see files like coaches, faces, messages, nations and some folders inside as well named ballcaps, jerseys, news, etc. If so, you are almost home.
5. the folder you just opened needs to have the name UMBL.lg so if it is named differently, now is the time to fix that. After extraction, some programs leave "tar" after the .lg so remove that.
6. Place this folder into your saved_games directory and fire up the game.

i know that i will get this if u continue to help and when i finally get it right i will laugh at how easy it is but not yet.

1. ok i dled and installed power archiver in Program files (i do have vista)

2. i dled the league file and SAVED it in the docs/si/saved_games etc.

3. ok now i have the dled file in that folder. i rt.clicked and see the alternative extract actions as well as Email it in that section. i clicked on the one u advised and it happens instantly and then a new file is created that is named UMBL.lg.tar. the file is empty. So something is happening here where the file is creating a new folder but is not extracting to it.

Hmmm step#6 place the folder in your saved_game directory- its already in that directory. That may be the problem. i am dling the league file into the saved game directory so everything is in that folder. should i be dling the league file into another location?

Please post a screenshot of your saved_games folder and a screeny of inside your league file,

i don't know how to do those things. i am not giving up but this is unnecessarily complicated. i played ootp online for as long as it has been going and never had these problems. what i will do is hire someone to educate me on the various ways of unzipping files. the money is not an issue but where in the hell did tar come from when this game has worked perfectly well with winzip. i buy the damn game for 35 bucks and then have to pay 75 to work the ##### files. i really appreciate your efforts but this should not be this difficult. if you can give me as much info so that when i have the person come over i can refer them to this process and hopefully it won;t take more than an hour to complete this SIMPLE ##### process.

But i am still curious i have played in close to 40 leagues in ootp and winzip has handled every file- where in the hell did these new files come from and why?
