BZ 1579: Scout Report:" An Offensive Force...might go .070/.070/.070"

I'm playing with fictional players and just finished the first season. I fired my scouting director and hired another one with higher ratings (Out of 20: Major19, Minor 20, Int. 20, Am. 20)

During the off season, I'm looking at his scouting reports for many of the top free agents. I'm constantly seeing typical reports like this:

Here is the free agent in question:

So my head scout says he's an offensive force and might go .070/.070/.070 ?? WTF??!

Sorry if this has been mentioned already but I coudn't find anything. There are many top players that my head scout predicts will go .070/.070/.070. Is it worth posting in the tech support forum, or is my new scout overrated and retarded? The head scout that I fired never never gave such ridiculous predictions.

I actually haven't seen any problems like this. Definitely might be worth posting in Tech Support.

I find the scouting summary dialog to be useless for the most part. I haven't seen it this bad but I have seen numerous comments like one on the leagues highest rated prospect. "Looks like a carreer minor leaguer." The scout seems to like even ratings across the board. Example: a hitter with :Yellow ratings of 52, 59, 49,57 gets good remarks where one with 23,60,95,30 gets trashed. They are inconsistant and I just don't read them anymore.

I also notice that a guy could have yellow and even green ratings but your scout will show his current overall (and future) ratings to be the bare minimum. I never quite understood that. In other words you could have a guy with all ratings in the 50s (I use the 100 scale) but the scout gives him a current overall rating of 20 and says he doesn't understand why the guy is even in the majors.

In this case you have to look at your criteria for overall ratings/stars. For instance, mine is something like: 30% ratings, 40% current stats, 20% last year's stats, 10% 2 years ago stats.

Therefore, it's completely logical for the ratings to be in the 50s, but if his stats aren't very good, his overall rating will reflect that.

And the easiest way to deal with this remains the simplest one: turn off scouting.

Really? I didn't realize that. In fact I did tweak the settings to put more weight on actual performance, so what you said could make sense.

Still, we are talking about two sets of ratings, and why would the ratings on one (contact, power, etc.) be all green and yellow i.e. at least "league average" but the overall ratings be red and basically indicate the player's a scrub?

Also, I have some players with decent hitting ratings that are performing decently but who are still rated as scrubs in the "overall" category by my scout.

I've thought about that but always enjoyed the scouting dynamic and trying to outguess the AI in drafting, trading etc.

I wonder if the assessment criteria (30% ratings, 40% current stats, etc.) affect what "suggestion" is made in the Minor League System Report.

The overall rating also takes into account speed/basestealing/baserunning as well as fielding ratings/stats. It also compares that player to other players at that position (or all hitters/pitchers, again depending on how you choose to have it).

So in reality, you can have a 1B who is a 50 out of 100 on every single rating, which would seem to indicate that he's an average ballplayer. However, he could be a 20/80 overall compared to all the other 1B.

If you think about it realistically, a guy like James Loney is pretty good. However, compared to other 1B in the league, he's probably not in the top 15.

I've used the scouting numerical ratings, but I never pay any attention to the narrative.

It's your game, play it your way. My way is with scouts off.

Let me ask you - how do the drafts go when you have scouts off? You still see the numbers but they are just 100% accurate? I guess they still change as players fizzle out or get better, but you see the real number without scout interface?
