Fail to start issues

Hi -

I have had a problem with my game after my company moved our "My documents" folder to a network home directory. If I am connected to our network I can't start the game, it fails to find the data directory. If I am not connected it starts to the main screen but when I try to load a game it tells me it can't drill down to various files and then just hangs and I have to kill it with Task Manager. What can I do to get back to working state with the least effort? I don't mind killing the install completely and starting from scratch. I have only one saved game that I care about and I can copy it out of the directory. Do I need to unlicense, uninstall, reinstall, relicense? What is the proper recovery?

I have Win XP + OOTP 9.2.2.

BTW: It would have been good to know that OOTP doesn't support offline/network files BEFORE the migration. Also I would strongly recommend that OOTP dev consider moving the entire game under a single parent directory.

Jeremy

not fixed yet.

No it didn't. I did search through all of the posts looking at possible resolutions. I even looked in the path files to see if there was something there which may have been changed. Basically when the "My Documents" folder was moved to the network drive it changed the default location on my machine to z:\my documents (where z:\ was the server\dirtree for our home dirs) The game points to /$root0/... I manually moved my "My Documents" back to my local machine hoping I could get the game to start and then make the change you mentioned moving the data folder but this has not been possible. I went into game preferences from the main menu and changed the location of my default data folder to the main game directory and moved a second copy there but the game still seems to be troubled by this.

more detail....

After moving my files back to the local "my documents" and deleting the relationship with the network store in windows (and a subsequent reboot) the game is working. Or at least I am assuming it is back to normal... I will play around with it a little and see what happens.

However, the fact that my path is different but the game still seems to rely on files stored in the default location is very troubling to me. I am going to continue to go through the game settings and look for any references to images, textures or data that would have been in the old default. My objective being to relocate the user data under the main app directory. Is this something in OOTP10 we can expect to be consolidated? The practice of placing application data in a shared system directory (with the exception of dlls) seems inherently risky. The practice of separating custom user and default app system data is admirable but this could be accomplished more efficiently with better safeguards.

Did you make any progress on this one, Jeremy? Is everything still okay?

If not, you could always try uninstalling and reinstalling the game into a different directory on your hard drive.
