Tarball compression takes too long

Ok this worked damned fine in OOTP2007. Why is it taking forever in OOTP9? I can see every 20-increment go by, one-by-one. This is ridiculous.

Seconded.

With zero changes at all, the time it takes to generate and then archive both league files and league reports as at least doubled from OOTP8 to OOTP9.

I'm going to move this thread to the OOTP Commissioners Corner forum for the time being as there may be more people viewing there that have a solution/ideas for this.

It's a duplicate of this post, though

Is there some reason we can't have a tech support thread about league file/report generation?

Haha yeah there's a reason. They don't want to fix it.
So it's "our" problem.

I just moved it back. I imagine Tony just didn't know about the other thread and, IMO, rightly thought other commissioners might have a solution as it probably wouldn't get fixed otherwise until OOTP10. If not, well, mod fight!

I'll post a link to this thread from the other so people reading either will know about the other.

Yep, that was my rationale behind that. Given that only showstoppers will now probably get an emergency patch anything like this is now going to be subject to workarounds until 10 comes out.

As the creator of the original post on this subject in the Commissioner forum, I'm afraid I have to agree with those complaining about the inordinate amount of time it takes to generate the tarballs. I had previously reported that setting a virus scanner exclusion for your league's directory helped speed up the process. While true, it simply doesn't do enough, as I've become painfully aware of now that we've hit the regular season. Tarball creation times are in the neighborhood of 3x longer than what it took under OOTP 8 using the exact same settings.

While I'd stop short of asking for an emergency patch, this is truly a major pain. If for some reason the sim runs a little long or I'm a little late getting started, my owners are going to have to wait much longer to get the new file than they would have previously (this actually happened last night). Knowing how long it's going to take to generate the tarball puts a great deal of pressure on me to rush through everything, and that of course leads to mistakes.

For me personally, this is currently the most pressing issue in need of fixing. I'm sure other online commissioners would express a similar sentiment.

Just posted in the other thread, too.

Grand total to create a 55 meg tarball - almost 4 hours.

I haven't changed anything since doing it with OOTP8, when it took about an hour.

This will have to be looked at for OOTP10. Since there are no patches more due for OOTP9, this thread will be closed for housekeeping.
