And another thing, Tiger Fan

Just a quickie.

If you do a historical sim and you change every year, according to history, what do you do from 1941-1945? Is there an option to just skip the leagues or do you play through it?

Thank you so much! This thread has convinced me that this version of OOTP will be the most immersive yet. I like playing semi-historical sims (starting in the mid-90's or late 80's) and the biggest reality-block in my mind was the lack of league history that would take so long to create in prior versions. I'm looking forward to starting a sim back as far as the game will go and then saving quickstarts every couple of decades in case for some reason I get moved to play in the 40's or the 70's. This is possible, right? Am I misunderstanding that feature?

Also, I want to thank all of you for contributing to such a positive thread the day before release. There's so much to be happy about with this version, I don't understand how some people can still complain. As the recent blogs and Markus' interview have said, no game is going to be perfect for everybody. Compared to the other games I've tried, this one seems to be the most versatile, statistically and strategically accurate, and (most importantly) most fun game in the genre. I've only lurked in the forums for a long time because of a lot of the negativity, but am glad to be contributing at a time when everybody's spirits are high. Tomorrow night couldn't come soon enough...

Altus - Don't worry about the WWII seasons of 1942-1945. We already changed the historical league expectancy totals for these seasons to the historical ratios of the seasons directly before and after the war. This way you won't get a drastic decrease in HRs and other offensive categories during these seasons.

Thanks. Is that in the Lahman as well, or just the database your building.

I believe it's theirs, the Lahman simply deals with what actually happened

Lahman is just the actual raw historical stats. My DB is modified.

But what I was referring to in my post is that regardless of what DB you use, the game will not assume a major decrease in offense during WWII. However, you should get better results from my modified DB (when it is finished) which has player stats already in tune with these modified expectancies.

Tiger - seems like a lot of the players have had major injury troubles. Can you relay your impression of the injury frequency?

"The second option I want to talk about is called “Automatically import historical player-creation modifiers”. If you want to run a straight historical league with only historical players from a DB, you don’t need this option enabled. This option is for generating fictional players. What kind of fictional players? Well, fictional players whose ratings look like they are of historical players from any time frame you want from 1871 - 2005.
Will this work with multiple independent leagues that you want to have different levels of talent created? If I set the Creation Modifiers for one league to be less than another, will it make it less relative to the 1905-1919 period, or does it ignore any other modifier settings you change?

I believe we notice it more here because we are mainly talking about guys who had long and productive careers in real life so when they are forced to retire at 35 it seems unusual. Yet in my sim there are lesser guys like Bill Slayback who I just mentioned above.

In real life Slayback was just 6-9 over 3 seasons but somehow he blossomed in my replay and lasted 16 seasons. Now did he get hurt in real life and not in my sim. I have no idea. All I can find on him is he hurled 7 innings of no-hit ball in his real life debut and wrote a song about Hank Aaron's chase for 714. Along the theme of Tiger pitchers, Mark Fidrych won over 100 games in my replay because he didn't blow out his arm playing long toss in spring training.

So I think it balances out.

I think we shouldn't worry about "Did x play a full career?" or not. To me, part of the fun of a historical sim is the unknown element. What might have happened if Ted Williams had a career ending injury IRL? Or, on the flipside, if Sandy Koufax had played out a full career? Historicals are as unpredictable as fictionals or modern day players, we just have the benefit of knowing what happened in the past.
