Good question. Every page should be printable via a browser.

Set Staff Size etc.

1. I am trying to replay the 50's and the AI controlled teams have pitching staff sizes of 12 to 14 when 10 would more historically accurate. No matter what I choose for rotation size and use of closers and relievers this remains true. So an option for staff size limit would be appreciated.

2. Same replay. With DH turned off the AI continually puts any available player who has DH as their main position on the ML roster no matter how atrocious their batting ratings are. Then they almost never get used and combined with number one (1) it gives you a bench of two (2) position players in some cases. This is less than optimal.

Thank you for your kind attention in these matters.

That would require a lot of research. The amount of data involved is ENORMOUS. Consider that in the late 1940s-early 1950s there were about 40 minor leagues in operation, not to mention the classification schemes have changed over the years and how minor leagues often changed member cities each year.

It's a fine idea, but it would mean A LOT of research work.

You can do this now. It just seems the steps involved are either misunderstood or not quite being followed properly.

In any case, while there were only major league schedule files to choose from that were included with the game, hopefully for next year's version there'll also be a very large selection of real-world-based minor league schedule files to choose from for use in the game. That didn't happen this year because I came up with that idea too late and there was simply far too much research involved to get it done in time for release.

Should be possible for OOTP2007 though.

No, it wouldn't, you misunderstood what was being suggested. That suggestion was for the teams themselves but not for the players, which would make it really easy to do, and I in fact have a copy of a database of historical minor league teams.

Two more necessary items!

But for ALL the minor leagues that have existed over the years? What about all the minor leagues that only lasted a few seasons? How will some of those leagues be classified in game terms since the classification scheme used in the game suits modern day baseball but not for minor league baseball prior to 1963?

There is A LOT of data to consider and get right, not to mention the choices that have to be made about how the various minor leagues should be classified (or included at all).

There have been somewhere around 250 separate minor leagues that have existed at one time or another since 1876.

An in-game view that is visually appealing. Ball flight. Easy imports of stadiums and drag and drop placement of fielders, runners, graphic displays.

A display of the field that actually shows the importance of range for a fielder and how critical positioning is -- even if it's as crude as a fielding bar that is wider for a SS with a 90 rating than one with 70 and only one pixel that lights up showing where the ball landed in relationship to this range and positioning. A real dream would be a graphic view of the field when a batter comes up that shows his spray chart graphically and you would point to the SS box and drag his position accordingly, with a view of the range of ground he can cover relative to that spray chart. Hey, I can dream, and we're talking about future features -- this would be ground-breaking; don't know anyone else who has this -- yet some of the very first board games did have grids for where the ball landed and your fielder positioning was very relevant.

One view without having to toggle to another screen or all kinds of other menus. This one view, in-game view should have such essential information as:

Both teams' lineups, pitch count, catcher rating, fielder ratings, runner ratings, and the ability to toggle menu views according to season, game, vs. pitcher stats.

Play by Play is absolutely worthless if you cannot see the text and cannot view the entire play in one box. Such great work was done to improve the PbP, the randomness of results, etc., and you can't see the entire thing in one window. Why must we be locked to a font size that a teenager can read but we old-timers just can't see? It must currently be 10-point font? Even legal documents are required to be at 12 point for the fine print. Why can't I customize the size and position of the PbP box and the font size like some of your competitors?

There is nothing more singly important than being able to see what happened on the play. With the incredible wealth of data that OOTP 2006 now collects, why can't some of this great stuff get reported into the play by play...Barry Bonds is hitting .400 against Maddux so far this season, including 3 HRs., the wind and the pitch...or...Ken Griffey is just feasting off Cub pitching here at Wrigley, he's hitting .350 with 11 HRs when playing here on the road...or Bobby Abreu has a 12-game hitting streak coming into today's game...(Is it impossible to capture and report data from the game log, such as PbP text like this: Thome is 2 for 4 today, he singled in the first and drove in two runs with a Hr in the 6th...here's the pitch...)

The ridiculousness of 26 lines of text for a simple groundout to short. Again, no problem with this if you could actually see more than 6 lines in the display. There's just no excuse for how poorly launched this was -- especially when we went through two years and two versions of previous OOTP games with this same fuss and it eventually got fixed in 6.5. Then, here we go again, a big step back as soon as OOTP 2006 hits the streets. Why, why, why?

There are days when I patiently know that this will eventually get tweaked and there are other days where I'm just tired of waiting, tired of how many versions to get the basics down right and tired of shelling out more bucks to get the first fully working version. I don't want to discourage the genius of this young kid, Markus. My goodness has he blown away the rusty, old-time Strat-o-Matic, which used to be the historical sim gold standard. But geesh, at least they stuck with things when they got the stats right and the fundamentals right.

In this era when consumers are spoiled, can download the competition in minutes, want customization, and have finally matured to the point of not shelling out money instantly when games are buggy and messed up, even waiting until the new release before buying the previous version, or trading on e-bay to get old standbys that really work -- the squeaky wheels on these forums are still posting because they really want to love this game.

As I keep returning to 6.5 and new versions of the competitors, I just keep shaking my head at the potential of OOTP 2006 but the ignored lessons of the previous versions.

Why we're revisiting pbp displays, aging and development and the way fields are imported from historical databases are very confusing to me. Why must the same problems be revisited when they were once cured in previous versions and months of customer complaints?

Since the database imports must bring in the historic data in order for the game to sim, why can't we have a view of the real life stats vs. the simmed stats? This feature is present in every single player card of PureSim 2007.

Here's a really big dream; actually have a player card of stats that can be printed in the format of a baseball card -- where the layout might have 8 player cards per page, the photo of the player with the career stats. Let us print them out, cut them up and have our own collection of simmed player greats. Can you imagine the fun of going back to the days of having your old baseball cards again, but this time with players from your fantasy leagues? When you move on to new leagues or new sims, you would still have that old collection of greats and a much quicker way to compare some of those league leaders or Hall of Famer performances of previous sims.

This would be the nice touch that really would be novel and ground-breaking. And would it really be that hard to implement? The data is there. The photos can be displayed. It's a matter of programming in order to click the player cards you would want to display and the page layout that would allow you to decide on displaying 4, 6 or 8 cards to a page, etc., maybe even allowing two-sided printing or allowing us to decide what info would be displayed to fit on the card.

I think that last idea is an excellent idea! In fact, this whole post is chock full of very good suggestions.

I doubt if anyone could have put it any better.

Just so you are aware there is also a similiar thread in the historical play section of the boards.

Collection of Requests to make Historical Replaying better

Virtually all points from it have been test-tracked for Markus to look at.

The Wolf:

I pulled a report of feature requests in Test Track to make a PDF for my personal use, prepping for an attack on the Feature Request forum.

I quit counting historical feature requests after 15. Many are set to Not reviewed at this time due to vacations. Some ( ex. TT# 2248) are already set to Add in Next full release.

Ex.

Auto changing era settings really are needed to go hand in hand with the automatically updating league total modifiers for historical sims.

"Era" settings that change automatically over time, i.e. bullpen usage, starting
pitcher endurance, closer usage, stealing and bunting frequency.

Could it be that the long-suffering historical aspect of the game will finally get as much love and attention as the fantasy aspect does? Stay tuned.
