Adding and deleting leagues idea

I haven't tried this, but for some reason the idea came to me at work today...

With OOTP6, if you started with one league league (what is now called a subleague), you could never add another within the game. However, there was a workaround. By creating a new league and copying over some files (I wrote up the details of this once somewhere in the OOTP6 Discussions), you could effectively copy your old league information into a new league.

I am wondering if, with OOTP2006, it would be possible to do this with worlds.

An example:

Let's say I have a world setup with one league in it, MLB, NL and AL. I get to 1914 and I want to add the Federal as a separate, standalone league. Theoretically, I could go through the process of creating a new world with the exact same setup except that I would add the FL at the very end. I could then copy over the files like players.dat, teams.dat, etc - except for world.dat (or I could just copy the new world.dat into the old version of the league's folder).

If it works like OOTP6 did, perhaps it would be a workaround - a tedious one, but a possible one - that would at least allow for the addition of new leagues. It may even be possible to affiliate and de-affiliate leagues this way, though that might be a lot more complicated.

Has anyone tried anything like this? If not, when I get a chance, I will.

An interesting idea.

I have a feeling, however, that when you create your new game, some aspect of the program will be looking for information for the new FL which your old .dat files will not be able to supply, thereby crashing and burning your entire baseball world.

It's worth a try. You'll pardon me if I let you go first, however.

It worked in OOTP6.5 because of the file structure that Markus had set up. It was sorta an accident that this worked: an accident created out of the design of the file structure.

If Markus writes things to files seperately, then it might work, otherwise, if there is ONE BIG database file, then you are kinda, sorta hosed. Let me know how it goes.

Yeah, I kind of suspect that it won't work. What gives me hope is that teams and players are in separate files. That might not mean much. I guess we'll see. Hopefully I'll try it on the weekend.

I have been working on something similar, trying to take the MLB rosters from Rolen's set and the Japan and Korea rosters from a world set and mesh them together. So far I haven't had a crash, but the international teams aren't working properly. They are there, but I can't even get to a roster page, just the team's home page. I need to look at using different combinations of files (players, teams, etc.)

Interesting. I wouldn't think this method would work too well for combining multiple universes, since the league IDs would probably conflict or something. I'm surprised you've been able to get as far as you apparently have.

You can definitely do this, I did it months ago. I just went by the instructions for importing rosters here. You have to change the player IDs in the imported leagues to match up to the player IDs of the fictional versions of the leagues that already exist in your universe. And you have to fictionalize the contracts, but my universe has been running with real MLB and Japanese rosters imported from two sources (along with a league imported from 6.5 and doezns of other fictional and fictionalized real leagues) just fine.

Well, I tried it as I described above and it crashed. I made game with a league of four teams in 2006, simmed to 1/1/07, started another game in 2006 with an additional league of four teams, and then copied the world.dat file from the second game to the first.

The actual info seemed to copy. One catch was that, since I hadn't gone through to the preseason of 2007, an almanac wasn't created for 2006. The other issue was that I had set the new league to have an initial draft. I think this is what crashed it, since it had no players in it. The game crashed when I tried to proceed one day to the initial draft. So an initial draft for the second league may be out. I'll try some other things.

Okay, it looks like it might work at least somewhat, but the history still isn't there.

I tried it again, but this time I went to the preseason of 2007 instead of 1/1/2007. Everything seems to work quite well. No crashes. But the one-year history of the original league is missing.

So, while it is possible to add a league this way, you don't get to see any some past information. Some stays: team histories, leaderboards. Some doesn't: season champs, awards.

That's probably enough to stop me from doing it in a real league.

Thanks for trying and posting. The crash possibility and the compromised history are dealbreakers for me. I'll wait for 2007 to see if this is included.
