Why should I buy 2006?

Hey guys,

Long time OOTP player from the ootp 3 days.

I have been leery in buying 2006 because it seems to buggy and I have seen compliants that the game is too deep and hard to navigate.

I have always wanted a game to have this kind of depth (with full minor leagues, international leagues etc) but am fearful it has become to deep with comments I have seen here.

I do not want to start a flame war. I am just asking opinions.

I'd say that if you've waiting this long you might as well wait for next year's version to come out. It should fix most of the bugs/issues with this version as well as add some exciting gameplay additions.

I know if I had not bought the game allready I would wait.

It's a good game. Many are disappointed that many key OOTP 6 features are not in 2006. They will return for OOTP 2007. If you never played 6, then they aren't exactly missing, are they?

The GUI is similar to FM. If you like FM, then this GUI will be a snap. Some preferred OOTP 6, and never made the leap.

There is a lot of power in the game setup, which is overwhelming to many. You may revel in this power or be distraught by the choices and decisions needed.

Key point:
There's nothing wrong with d/l the demo and forming your own opinion.

You may decide to sit on your wallet for next year's version, or find that this OOTP 2006 version has compelling things that are not in version 3.

In my opinion, OOTP 2006 always felt like a work in progress.
I am sure that the 2007 version will fix that, Markus has said a while back that he is hoping to re-introduce all those old v6 features that didn't make it in the re-write, and most of the reamining bugs will be fixed.

I suggest you wait until 2007 comes out,
but if the demo knocks your socks off then by all means support the cause.

If you like solo fictional play and enjoy customizing a lot of stuff, this is one of the best sports titles around for that. However, if you want something ready to go out of the box, you might wait for the next version. Markus has stated that the next version should be easier to get into at start up.

There have been several patches released that have stabilized the game considerably. But, if the remaining bugs will bug you too much you might want to wait.

As others have suggested, give the demo a good work out.

Just a comment on the interface. I found it very difficult to understand at first. After getting into the game and learning it, I don't find it any more difficult to navigate than OOTP4, 5, or 6 (I don't go back any farther than that). It's just very different.

I will concur that configuring the game to work a certain way takes a long time if you're customizing things.

I agree that the demo is a good idea, but I'd go one step further and say actually owning the game - after demo use - will allow you ample time to become accustomed to the overall feel of the game, get over that initial learning curve and work-ethic spirit it possesses and customize both the game and your task routines to your individual preferences.

Beyond that familiarization benefit, your comments as you experience the game - both good and bad - will contribute twofold: feedback during the period when suggestions are still being evaluated for 2007 and when the "goodies", so to speak, do find their way into the new version you'll be even more delighted to see the changes then you'd have been otherwise.

Personally I took to the navigation and depth fairly quickly. There was a learning curve but then it has the FM feel and I had experience with it. The game has been patched to where it seems to be stable for most although there are varying opinions about some of the results.

I say the best opinion is yours and yours alone. Some were disappointed that some things from previous versions were left out, others thought the game was better off without them or didn't miss them.

We are closing in on a new version but the demo is always there to see what you think.

That tends to change my thinking just a little bit. I'd set aside some time where you have 16-20 hrs with the demo, and see if this is the game you love.

If so, buy it, and get over the learning curve now vs next spring. If it's addicting, it's worth the cash. If it's merely good, in your eyes, you may want to wait for the preorder window for OOTP 2007.

You will need some time with the demo to give it a good chance.

Good idea. Raidergoo's, Zitofan's, and endgame's thoughts about using this to springboard yourself along on the learning curve are good ones. You will then enjoy the 2007 version that much more, especially with the restorations of previous features.

BTW, I'm not saying that there won't be any negative comments after these, but flame war I doubt. However, had you started this thread back in August or September, it would be several pages by now.

Frankly, this may seem weird coming from someone on the "inside," but I'd say this: if you're easily frustrated or stressed out by games, I'd either get the demo or skip until next year.

It's definitely a big change, and it does have a steep learning curve - something that Markus and crew will really look to improve in 2007.

But, if you're the type who is patient enough to play with the game until you get a little more familiar with it, and go through a little trial and error, I think you'll find this game rewarding.

Just my opinion tho'.

While I always welcome the chance to make things easier, I am becoming a bit alarmed the game could be "dumbed" down in some areas.

Why should you buy 2006...hmmm...because you like paying to beta-test?

Oh...you mean the beta is over? This is considered a finished product? Yea, about as much as BC3000AD version 1.0 was.

The last version isn't really buggy. Now is actually the best time to buy an OOTP game; historically, it's always taken the community and the developers a few months to get the big bugs worked out, then the game cruises along nicely for a while, then the new version comes out and everyone abandons the old version for it, then the new version has its bugs, and so on. When you pop in 6 months after the fact you basically let everybody else do all the post-beta testing for you.

So I say buy it now. The game is working really, really well, and if you want to wait for next year's features without the bugs, you might well be waiting into next August. Not speaking as a beta tester here or as someone with any inside knowledge of the game, just speaking from experience.

Since the last patch -- I think (as many do) that it has become a very good sim. By far the best "total baseball experience". IMO, far beyond 6.5. Also, my biggest fear about 2007 is that it will be dumbed down a bit.

Yes, it is difficult (much like FM) and it does take awhile to get up to speed. SI's Football Manager sells over 1.6 million copies are year and it get more complex every year. Therefore, I hope Markus "increases the complexity" and improves AI a bit.

However, I also look forward to many of the forgotten aspects of 6.5 returning. Plus, I'm convinced that sound and 2D animation are on the way too.

There is a thread right now at FOFC about what everyone's favorite text sim by sport is. Not one person has named the new OOTP game. 6.5 gets about 80% of the votes - someone even voted for Mogul 07.
