Malleus Dei & Forums

Folks,
First off, let me say this. I am Jay Conley, and some of you might remember me as Mazeroski from the OOTP3 days. I have recently come back to the boards, having just got a computer again. I'd go into the story of why I didn't have one for all of last fall and into the winter, but it is a long story, and would probably bore you to tears.
I am dismayed by the quality these boards have taken. When I used to post here, I was amazed at how everyone in the OOTP community was out to help the others, as it should be. Then petty threads started to creep in, or threads in the wrong place, etc. I have noticed Malleus trying to keep the boards from getting this way, but he has only been able to do so much.
I can understand that people might think that Malleus can be too blunt. However, when I beta tested OOTP3 with Malleus, I found his knowledge of the game very helpful, and was grateful for it. He always took time to help with suggestions on books to read or what to look for to improve my knowledge of baseball. For that I am grateful. Malleus does not mind that you ask for help, it's how you do it.
Yes, Malleus can be very blunt, however, if we as a community were to take our time, increase our knowledge of the game, and post in the right part of the forums, this would do much to help the boards as a whole. We have lost a good section of the old time guard here, (Tris, and Middlega, being 2 of them I had the privelege of beta testing with). It might be too late to get them back to the boards, but it is never too late to keep the old guard here. I hope, no, I pray, that this community does everything it can to keep folks such as Malleus and Tresclub here, for this game deserves them.
Those of you who beta tested any of the OOTP games know of the quality of work that the beta testers do. We should all be grateful to them, and hope that from their knowlege, we can all benefit.
Thank you,
Jay Conley

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Malleus came by right now and posted something like:

"What does this have to do with OOTP? Try the off topic forum buddy."

I understand your point.

But this is what happens when the size of a board or community grows. I've seen it happen on many other boards.

There's not much you can do about it really. As you can see, Steve's got stickys EVERYWHERE telling folks to post in the right forum, don't double or triple post, etc. but when you have this many folks posting not everyone is going to read the posts that say 'ATTENTION LOOK HERE BEFORE YOU LOOK ANYWHERE ELSE'.

On top of people not reading, you've got discussions about people posting in the wrong place, discussions about annoying posters, and discussions about Steve or whoever being rude because he's trying to keep a little order.

And now, I continue the downward spiral by discussing the decay of the boards

Steve is one guy. Stickies lose meaning over time.

Unless additional moderators are promoted to help run the boards (letting Steve concentrate on tech support) then I can guarantee you that these boards are never going to improve...

I have to agree with Subby here. What many people fail to remember is that in the "good ol' days" the board was much better "mannered", if you will, but the fan base was incredibly smaller as well. With the increase in people interested in the game, our little utopia cannot possibly remain the same.

This is the problem. It is a double standard to basically say "Malleus can be just as rude as he wants because that's just the way he is, but EVERYBODY ELSE has to watch how they behave and make sure they're polite when they post".

I'm a computer consultant. I used to work with a guy who was very smart and knew a TON more about the technology than I ever will, but he was one of the most abrasive people I'd ever met. When he was sent to a client site he was not listened to because the message got lost in his approach - basically yelling and calling everyone else morons (sound familiar?).

I personally don't like being called a moron. It has already made me leave this board once. I know - no big loss, right? Well, I'm just one of many who has a problem with what's going on here.

BTW, if you look at all the big flame wars of the past few months there has been one common denominator. I think that speaks for itself.

I second that.

Also, as someone pretty new to the board (still with my outsider's perspective), it seems that there are a good number of people using content as a means to judge the worth of the board. While of course people should talk about the game, or at least about the sport, it isnt fair to criticize what others deem interesting or valid. A board is nothing more than a conversation, where you will not always like, understand, or agree with what people have to say, but as long as theyre polite, they should be allowed to say whatever they want.

Calling Malleus 'blunt' is like saying the Titanic sprung a little leak. The guy is a rude pompous ass that creates more disruption on this board than any other source. Yeah great he has some good idea's and makes some contributions... big deal, personally I wouldn't avail myself of any contributions he has or will make simply because he is a miserable SOB. Just my opinion....

I realize this is only my opinion but I find it kind of sad that so many people put so much emphasis on the state of an internet message board. Speaks volumes about our society today. Get out....meet people...volunteer....I enjoy this forum but I don't lose sleep over who might or might not be happy about what is being posted in what forum. Let the flames begin......

(The following message is a prophecy of what is to come, in hopes of changing the future):

Poster 1: "This board is going to hell. It must be fixed."
Poster 2: "There's nothing wrong with this board. I can say what I want."

Repeat above exchange, with various posters chiming in their variations of the above arguments.

Poster 3: "This is going to be a long thread."
(Btw--This is the only post that will be made here that can be objectively described as 100% correct)

Posters 4-8 (approximately): Various attempts at humor to derail above exchange, with varying levels of success.

Poster 1: "You're all wrong. I'm telling you this has to change. And everyone who agrees with Poster 2 is a moron."
Poster 2: "No, you're wrong. If you don't like it, just leave. And everyone who agrees with Poster 1 is a moron."

So sayeth the Prophet. Now having already seen what is to come, let us all proceed with great restraint to change what the Prophet has foreseen.

Cause he's: Nick Burns, your company's computer guy!

Oh, and uh... you're welcome!
