One thing I will observe is that eLicense is stupid. It works, but I have noticed that the game can get spontaneously unlicensed. This has happened to me twice: once I was able to insert my old license key and everything worked hunky-dorey, but the other time I had to e-mail eLicense and wade through about a billion things before they opened up one of my slots. I suspect part of the problem was that I had previously installed that version of OOTP on my Windows machine.

Of course, I already hated eLicense with the firey hate of a thousand suns. And it did eventually get fixed because I was very lucky and didn't get an idiot for a support representative. But still, it's something for Wine users to keep an eye out on.

(And this brings up the immortal questions: why can't game companies not treat us like criminals and just make software that works? Aaah...)
Next time it looses the licesnse, try unlicensing before you relicense. I did that and it worked fine and I knowmy other license was in use on my laptop.

Dola,

Why are you guys fiddling with paths and drives? If you set wine up to use your home directory as your documents and setting directory everything should work fine.

I have OOTP7 running perfectly using MEPIS Linux, with no additional configuration needed whatsoever. I find it to be significantly faster than in XP.

But I can't seem to get it to run in Ubuntu (7.10). The game will load the splash screen, then it simply terminates. Can't quite figure it out. I've tried the advice above with no luck...

Anyone have it running with 7.10 that might be able to help?

Scott

Scott I'm running on 7.10 as I type this. How did you install OOTP?

One problem I do have, and haven't figured out how to deal with is the file names in the file list boxes are out of order. They are find in the os, just crazy in OOTP.

I installed OOTP7 using the default setting - of which there is one: where to install the game. It defaults to C:/Program Files/Sports Interactive/OOTP Baseball 2007. When I try to start the program, it loads the splash screen, asks for registration info (which I will do when I get it working - currently I just clik on "Trial"), then starts to load. At the point where the main menu is supposed to come up, the game simply terminates.

I'm sure it has something to do with a config file somewhere (obviously), but I can't figure out which one. Like I said, I tried the method mentioned previously in this thread with no success.

Thanks for your help,
Scott

EDIT - I added a "paths" file as described above to c:\windows\profiles\scott\application data\sports interactive\ootp baseball 2007\data\config that consists of:

path_user_data
C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\OOTP Baseball 2007\data

....and I can get to the main menu screen, with a message saying "The user data folder can not be found. Please reinstall..."

I also tried pointing that file to C:\windows\profiles\scott\My Documents\Sports Interactive\OOTP Baseball 2007\data with no success.

So I'm not sure where I need to point that file to.

Hmmm, I didn't have to go through any of that. Do you have the "My Documents" listed in your wine configuration? I have it point to my home directory and have no problems with the paths ect.

Thanks for your help, but I just can't seem to find the magic answer here. In my wine config, I had the My Documents link left blank, so that it will reference the actual My Documents folder. But I did try changing it to /home/, and moving the Sports Interactive folder from My Documents to my home folder with the same result. Splash screen loads, then nothing.

I have also done a side-by-side comparison between my Windows drive and Ubuntu drive to ensure all files are in the right places - they are.

I am stumped...

As a test, try turning FaceGen off and re-running.

Ahh, I think I may be on the right path now. Ran it from a terminal and got a GLXBadContext error. So it must be a graphics setting messed up somewhere. I have been using the default ATI drivers with Ubuntu.

I am 99% sure the game will work just fine in the original configuration once I figure out that error. Thank you again for all your help!

Darn ATI cards...

Okay,

Switched video cards, and all is running 99.9% fine.

One huge problem:
I'm in an online league, and when I click on the "Export Team via FTP" link, all seems to go fine within the game. But the commish is reporting "Error code 110 either the file is corrupt, incomplete, or has an old file format"

My team file is apparently not being uploaded entirely, and I can't figure out why. The team file size on my computer is approx 57kb, but the file that the commish ends up with is only approx 41kb, obviously incomplete.

I'm using wine 0.9.53, a fully registered OOTP 2007 2.0.3.68, and Ubuntu 7.10.

Once again, I am stumped. Any help is appreciated!

I have the same problem and unfortunately its one of the two things I haven't been able to fix. The other is the order files appear in the file select dialog box. Its like its doing an ls and not parsing the different columns so its all out of order in OOTP.

Thanks Jarmenia,

At least I know it is not something I am doing wrong. If I find a workaround, I will post it, but for now, looks like booting into Windows to export!

Thanks,
Scott

The export works fine just not the FTP so if you can get your commish to allow you to email the export you won't have to boot into windows and use both licenses for your game on one machine. That's what I do and it works ok, just a pain that the FTP doesn't work.

What's funny is the FTP download works fine, its just the upload. Makes me think its a permissions issue or something like that (can't read the file because its locked by OOTP in another process or something.)

Why not just set your PC up to dual boot and then boot to Windows when you want to play OOTP? I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm just curious.

Because for me 95% of all things I do on my computer are in Linux. The 5% I do in windows is development only so I don't like having to reboot just to use OOTP. And since the two or three issues I have under Linux are pretty minor, I just use Linux. Besides, the game actually runs faster under Wine/Linux than it does under windows. I have no idea why, but it does...

Yup, the game runs much faster in Linux. I would say nearly 50% faster.

Right now I do dual-boot, but only for OOTP.

But you are right, it downloads updates just fine, only the upload is corrupt. I still can't quite figure out why. If anyone finds a solution (other than directly FTPing) , please post it.

Thanks,
Scott

I just installed OOTP8 into my Xubuntu system (running Hardy Heron beta), and I'm getting some pretty nasty graphical glitching:

It happens whenever I mouse over most PNGs in the interface, which makes navigating the menus a little bit of a challenge. Anybody else run into anything like this?

This sounds like a driver issue. What video card do you have installed?
