Since Hardy hasn't been officially released there's a good chance NVIDIA hasn't released compatible drivers for it yet. Can't you give it a whirl in Gutsy?

My laptop runs Gutsy, but OOTP8 would bring it to it's knees (Pentium 2, 366mhz, 128mb RAM). I can always boot into XP (or do my online league stuff on my PC at work) until I get this sorted out.

Hmm...juggling stuff in the WINE registry has no effect (unless I just haven't hit on the magic item yet), neither does running OOTP8 in a "virtual desktop". If I hit on anything, I'll be sure to post about it.

Get a real OS
![]() Seriously though, having spent many years using Linux, WINE is a cheap hack at best. Games are NEVER going to run well. And now I realise someone will leap in and try and defend the indefensible, but the fact is if you're a gamer, Linux is really a waste of your time. (And I say that as someone who has used Linux for 9 years.) In Windows, you put a game on, it works. You spend more time mucking about in Linux than you do actually playing. Not to mention that Beryl/Compiz etc... Their lovely 3D effects make it so you can't do stuff properly without shutting them down first. In short, it's not worth the effort. I remember getting Championship Manager 01 running under WINE. I played it for a bit, then gave up and went back to Windows. There's just too many niggly little annoyances. I gave up on my attempts to run WOW in Ubuntu. It worked, but if I wanted to do something else, it just went nuts, whereas in Windows, it just worked. (And it's not very often you can use the phrase "it just worked" for Windows.) Last edited by Bonedwarf; 04-05-2008 at 12:49 AM. |

edit: Well, that didn't help. I see that WINE is updated from the version in the Hardy repos, so I'll try compiling that over the weekend...

That being said, I use Linx for 95% of everything I do durring the day. Why would I want to boot into windows just to play OOTP when I can do that on my linux box. BTW, the uptime on my Linux box just hit the 125 day mark. Lets see windows do that

So it turns out it was driver-related after all. I used EnvyNG to roll back to the 96.43.05 drivers, and OOTP8 now loads up normally. I have yet to try playing a game, but at least now I can read the menus! Here it is in all its' composited glory behind my transparent terminal!

Andreas told me earlier this year he could build OOTP on Linux but the thing holding them back from releasing a Linux port is the lack of copy protection on Linux. I spent a good amount of time during this years beta trying to find adequate copy protection for Linux but to no avail. The whole premise of Linux is diametrically opposed to copy protection so you can see why this is a problem.
