Having ditched Windows for Linux, I'm wondering about the potential for Linux support or, barring that, using WINE to run OOTP. Has anybody had any luck with OOTPB 2007, or any earlier version (I purchased 4, 5, 6, and 6.5)?

That said, my limited trials with OOTP07 and WINE have thus far been unsuccessful due to the fact that the game installs into 2 separate folders and a third is used to store the User's data. This is probably something that can be addressed by editing the WINE registry though. |

Thanks!
All, thanks very much for the info.
If any of you hear about a way to get OOTP to work under Linux, I'd very much appreciate it if you would send me an e-mail or post a reply to this topic. I'll peek in every so often to see how OOTP is doing anyway. |

Ok, I got it running under WINE. Here's what I did:
1. Install the game as you normally would. 2. After installation, find out where the 'user data' and 'application data' folders are. 2a. My appdata folder was in .wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/myname/App... 3. Create the 'paths' file as instructed in this thread. 4. Make sure that the user data folder contents get copied to whatever path you set up in the paths file. After that, it should at least start up. I haven't attempted to play around with it yet. |

Yyyyyessss! The demo version is running under Linux (Ubuntu, BTW), and I can see the various management screens!
Thanks very much, billethius! Now...I've stayed up way past my bedtime, which I guess is par for the course with a new OOTP release. It's hard to want to go to sleep now ;-) |

To answer my own question, no. If anything its faster because I get to use all four gigs of my RAM and both processors. The more I dabble with Ubuntu, the more I love it!

Yeah, your internet connection should have nothing to do with how well the software works.
I have OOTP7 running perfectly using MEPIS Linux, with no additional configuration needed whatsoever. I find it to be significantly faster than in XP. But I can't seem to get it to run in Ubuntu (7.10). The game will load the splash screen, then it simply terminates. Can't quite figure it out. I've tried the advice above with no luck... Anyone have it running with 7.10 that might be able to help? Scott |

Just to add to the chorus, I play OOTP2007 exclusively under Wine, and it mostly works (there's some directory fiddling mentioned above but it's no big deal). I haven't noticed any features that fail, either, so that's also pleasant. Speed seems to be as good as it was on Windows XP x64 for me.
One thing I will observe is that eLicense is stupid. It works, but I have noticed that the game can get spontaneously unlicensed. This has happened to me twice: once I was able to insert my old license key and everything worked hunky-dorey, but the other time I had to e-mail eLicense and wade through about a billion things before they opened up one of my slots. I suspect part of the problem was that I had previously installed that version of OOTP on my Windows machine. Of course, I already hated eLicense with the firey hate of a thousand suns. And it did eventually get fixed because I was very lucky and didn't get an idiot for a support representative. But still, it's something for Wine users to keep an eye out on. (And this brings up the immortal questions: why can't game companies not treat us like criminals and just make software that works? Aaah...) |
