how do stats affect player ratings?

I'm just wondering how the game processes player's performances (as gauged by stats) in determining player ratings for fictional players or in fictional leagues. say, there is a player with not so much power in terms of power rating (not from bad scouting, but from his real power ability as seen in the player editor), but for whatever reason was able to hit 50 homeruns in a particular year. does this have any effect on (re-)calculating the player's ratings, come next season? would his power rating go up?

more broadly, what are the mechanisms behind calculations of player ratings as time passes?

if anyone has answers to these questions, thank you!

Ratings generate stats. Stats do not generate ratings. A guy playing over his head will not have his ratings increase, BUT he might get a 'hot' symbol next to his name, and the symbol itself might positively modify his ratings for as long as it lasts.

Or so I'm told. None of my players has ever gotten either the 'hot' or the 'cold' symbol, so I'm not speaking from experience.

How do you do that? It seems like I've usually got three players at the Major League Level with one or the other.

Play out a season and you will see plenty on them.

As Curtis said, ratings -> stats, not vise versa. Though a guy who is playing over his ratings apparently has some better opportunity for a talent/potential increase.
