Lifelong Texan Reporting For Duty
Alice Ideals (famous Tejano record label in the city)
Austin Blues (big time blues-heavy local music scene) Beeville Bees (how can you say no?) Brownsville Eagles (Eagle Bus Manufacturing was a big employer for a long time) Corpus Christi Giants (old Texas League team was the Giants) Eagle Pass Mavericks (name of the county) Edna Railmen (railroad important to city's founding) Freeport Hurricanes (just because) Harlingen Herons (the Texas coast is excellent for birding) Galveston Pirates (old Texas League was the Pirates) Kingsville Kings (lame but easy) Laredo Cowboys ("As I walked out in the streets of Laredo...") McAllen Royals (it's in Hidalgo County, Hidalgo is a corruption of the Spanish "Hijo de Algo" - son of someone, which was used for minor royalty & such) Port Lavaca Mariners/Indians/Whoopers (it's a port, Indians used to live there, Whooping Cranes winter near there) San Antonio Bears (it's a pun on Bexar, pronounced "Bear" more or less, which is the county in which San Antonio resides) Victoria Bulls (just because)

I like it, but not for Galveston. It'd be great for someplace like Mineral Wells or Wichita Falls that are really up in tornado alley.
Just my annoying Two-Stepping' Two Texan Cents

Why thank you!
I wish I could say I'd slaved over it, but I've done multiple Texas-based leagues over the years so most of these came easily. But still, thanks!

Oh man. Do you really want to see a bunch of AA scrubs in their skivvies (or less)? I mean, if baseball had cheerleaders I could be convinced, but otherwise... way too much chance of the dancing banana for my tastes...

That's funny, but a lame name for the hometown of Stone Cold Steve Austin. It's a very rustic industrial town great for a Sunday ride on your Harley. Maybe the Victoria Roughnecks or something.

Galveston Storm (still talked about MANY generations later as the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history).
Austin Senators (Senators and Black Senators are the first two pro teams from here) - Gotta play at Hornsby Bend Park (fictional), where Rogers Hornsby is still buried (real - at the actual Hornsby Bend). The two work together well, as that's MLK Blvd (FM 969), the Eastside, and a place rich with baseball tradition and black history (Wee Willie Wells, Joe Wood, Hilton Smith). For what very little it's worth, 'round these parts, Austin (and to a lesser degree, SA) would not be considered 'South Texas'. Gotta put it somewhere, though. Kingsville Ranchers - Still, I believe, the largest ranch in the country, King Ranch, and the 'real' start to American ranching. I also *strongly* endorse jetking's following suggestions, especially Laredo, which is just plain brilliant. That name is THICK with history and culture in that place for hundreds of reasons. Alice Ideals (famous Tejano record label in the city) Brownsville Eagles (Eagle Bus Manufacturing was a big employer for a long time) Eagle Pass Mavericks (name of the county) Edna Railmen (railroad important to city's founding) Laredo Cowboys ("As I walked out in the streets of Laredo...") McAllen Royals (it's in Hidalgo County, Hidalgo is a corruption of the Spanish "Hijo de Algo" - son of someone, which was used for minor royalty & such) Port Lavaca Whoopers San Antonio Bears (it's a pun on Bexar, pronounced "Bear" more or less, which is the county in which San Antonio resides)

I'd also be entirely supportive up the Senators for Austin. I almost suggested it as well. Quote:
![]() It doesn't really matter, of course. It's just that as a Texan I have to point out bigness whenever and wherever possible. Those of you not from here will have to take me at my word when I say that I'm only complying with National (sorry, I mean State) law ![]() Cheers to enuttage for his suggestions and, of course, his support of mine. You sir, do me an honor.

I'm usually fond of keeping team names the same as they were historically in most cases.
Harlingen was at one time home to the Rio Grande Valley Giants. Victoria had the Toros San Antonio Bears, Bronchos, I always use Missions, but it's a current team. Austin Senators are a must. I've also used Galveston Buccaneers, and Corpus Christi Clippers. (the other options were Giants and Hooks, but the latter is a current team) Beeville is also the training center for State Correctional Officers, should you not want the obvious "Bees", Guards or Guardsmen might work. A Last edited by Bishop; 05-06-2008 at 06:34 PM. Reason: apparently the Clippers were a real team in the Big State League |
