Bunting

Because most modern leagues are built on power and pitching, I haven't thought about this until now. Can the bunting skills be improved by setting the management style all the way to the right for sacrificing, etc? In short, does this improve, or is it, like speed, established when the player is initialized and never gets better or worse?

I don't know the answer to your specific question, but I have noticed that if a player is highly rated in the 'bunt for hit' category and I set his personal strategy to 'bunt very often', his batting average improves noticeably.

You know, I don't think too many people have done much experimenting with bunting.

Leave it to statheads. Although they'll tell you to a decimal how much a walk is worth.

From playing out my teams games it seems that the AI handles "bunt for a hit " reasonably well for highly rated players although success rate might be a bit high, but often in a situation where the AI team is down a run in the 9th with a runner on first and one out a low rated bunter will attempt a sacrifice with predictable consequences. My evidence is anecdotal but I'll keep a closer eye on the frequency of these situations.

My plan in my current league is to go down to the rookie league and set the strategy to bunting all the time. And I suppose for the faster players, I'd set their own personal strategy that way as well. My goal is to create a franchise that is built on speed and fundamentals, rather than power.
